Memorial Day Services Scheduled in Starke County

Memorial Day services are scheduled throughout Starke County Monday, May 29.

The Knox VFW Post 748 will be holding a Memorial Day ceremony Monday, May 29 at the Veterans Memorial at the Starke County Courthouse starting at 9 a.m. CT.

Kathy Norem will begin the ceremony with guest speaker, retired Indiana State Senator Jim Arnold.

Lucas Porter will sing the National Anthem and the VFW Honor Guard will perform the raising and lowering of flags to half mast.

Musical performances will be provided by the Knox and North Judson-San Pierre High School bands followed by the placement of the wreaths.

The parade to Crown Hill Cemetery will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT and will include the Knox and North Judson-San Pierre bands, the VFW Honor Guard, the American Legion Honor Guard and The Legion Riders, and many more.

Kathy Norem and guest speaker Jim Arnold will close out the ceremony at 10 a.m. CT at the Crown Hill Cemetery with Taps played by the VFW honor Guard, a 21-gun salute and a placement of the wreaths.

The Knox VFW is still looking for volunteers to stand guard for half time slots from noon Sunday to noon Monday. Interested volunteers can sign up at the Knox VFW at 1511 S. Heaton Street.

Additionally, the North Judson American Legion Post #92 will have ceremonies Monday, May 29 at the Pioneer Cemetery at 9 a.m. CT, in San Pierre at 10 a.m. CT, and in LaCrosse at 11:15 a.m.  Veterans will lay wreaths in the Kankakee River at the bridge on U.S. 421 at 11 a.m. CT. 

The Hamlet American Legion #356 will have ceremonies Monday, May 29 at the Grovertown Cemetery at 10 a.m. CT, Eagle Creek Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. and at Fletchers Cemetery at 11 a.m. CT.
