Starke County is the recipient of a federal Help America Vote Act grant that will be used toward local election improvement and security efforts.

More than 60 Indiana counties will be receiving federal Help America Vote Act grant dollars to go toward local election improvement and security efforts. The Secretary of State has reviewed and approved local election improvement sub-grant proposals valued at approximately $2 million.

Secretary of State Diego Morales visited Starke County Clerk Bernadette Manuel’s office Tuesday where she was officially handed a grant check worth $10,169.17.

Manuel said the money will be used to purchase carts for the poll workers to transport election equipment to the polls and make delivery more organized at the Vote Centers. The funding will also buy four new e-poll books to assist with long lines at Vote Centers to make things more efficient, and the purchase of high-visibility weighted cones to help indicate voting chutes at Vote Centers.

She noted that all items will be purchased for the 2024 election year.
