Starke County Youth Club Radiothon Set for May 3

An opportunity to assist the youth of Starke County engage in after school homework help and enrichment programs is coming up Friday, May 3.

The Starke County Youth Club Radiothon is scheduled for Friday May 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CT live on WKVI. Starke County Youth Club Executive Director Irene Szakonyi said the Starke County Youth Club benefits the entire community.

“We support kids and families and we do that through a lot of endeavors, actually,” said Szakonyi. “We do that through after school programs, we host morning care, we do summer and spring break programming, and enrichment camps all throughout the year. We do that so kids can find personal and academic success. We’re really lucky to have great partnerships with kids and their families. We serve over 300 kids every year and get to see them every day after school and lots of times during the summer. They get to have all these unique experiences with us.”

Szakonyi explained that they enrich students through the arts, and everyday living experiences, including a cooking class.

“In the fall, we hosted a family cooking class so kids and their adult family member could sign up for our four-part series where they came in and learned about kitchen safety, health and nutrition, and how to put together a healthy meal. They actually did the work to create these dishes with their adult family member. It was so successful in the fall that we had to run the series again in February where we had maxed out capacity. It was wonderful and they told us that they learned new things, they tried new foods, and some of the kids actually said they are more willing to eat fruits and vegetables now which I think is really great.”

Irene will talk more about what more programming is available with the Starke County Youth Club in an upcoming newscast.
