Memorial Day Services Scheduled in Starke County

Memorial Day services are scheduled throughout Starke County Monday, May 27.

The Knox VFW Post 748 will be holding a Memorial Day ceremony Monday, May 27 at the Veterans Memorial at the Starke County Courthouse starting at 9 a.m. CT.

Orak Shrine Pipers will perform along with bands from Knox Community School Corporation, North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation and Oregon-Davis School Corporation. Wreath presentations will be made and then there will be a parade to Crown Hill Cemetery. Jim Arnold, who is a former La Porte County Sheriff, former Indiana State Senator and a veteran, will be the keynote speaker. The 21-gun salute will be conducted by members of the American Legion Post #131 and Taps will be played by members of the Knox VFW Post 748.

Volunteers will also be standing guard at the VFW for a 24-hour vigil. More volunteers are needed to stand guard at the Post from noon Sunday to noon Monday. Interested volunteers can sign up at the Knox VFW at 1511 S. Heaton Street. Opening and closing ceremonies for the vigil will include the firing of the canon.

Additionally, the North Judson American Legion Post #92 will have a parade from the area of Post Office on Keller Avenue to Pioneer Cemetery at 8:45 a.m. CT with ceremonies Monday, May 27 at the Pioneer Cemetery at 9 a.m. CT, in San Pierre at 10 a.m. CT, and in LaCrosse at 11:15 a.m. CT. Veterans will lay wreaths in the Kankakee River at the bridge on U.S. 421 at 11 a.m. CT.

The Hamlet American Legion #356 will have ceremonies Monday, May 27 at the Grovertown Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. CT, Eagle Creek Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. and at Fletchers Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. CT.
