The Knox Community School Board members approved the hire of Harold Smith as the chief of police for the Knox Community School Corporation Police Department during their meeting Monday, October 7.
The school board recently approved action to create a corporation police department. The hire of a chief of police was the next step of a few others needed to fully implement the police department on campus.
Superintendent Greg Mikulich said that it will take about a year to get the full process underway, but Chief Smith has begun duties at the school corporation. Mikulich said having the corporation police department will help increase school safety.
At least one reserve officer may be added as the process moves forward but for now the chief of police is the only officer hired for the Knox Community School Corporation Police Department.
Mikulich added that the school received several applications for the position of chief of police.
Smith is expected to be sworn into office Thursday, October 10 at 2 p.m. at the Corporation Administration Office.
