Indiana State Police Investigate Officer Involved Shooting in Jasper County

The Indiana State Police, at the request of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, is investigating an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary investigation by the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division Lowell Post revealed that Sunday, January 26 at approximately 4:15 p.m., a deputy with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department performed a traffic stop on a vehicle on State Road 14 east of County Road 475 E. This location is near the Pulaski County line on State Road 14. During the traffic stop, the officer attempted to arrest the suspect when the suspect resisted, according to the report. Police say an altercation took place between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and fatally wounding the suspect. The investigation also shows that during the traffic stop, the suspect was in possession of a firearm.

The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Jasper County Coroner released the identity of the deceased as Matthew W. Huttle, 42, from Hobart. Family has been notified and an autopsy was completed Monday morning.

According to our reporting partners at Network Indiana, Huttle was recently pardoned by President Trump for storming the Capitol on Jan. 6. Both he and his uncle were arrested for their involvement in the Capitol riots, but later pardoned.

Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson said the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave which is standard protocol.

This investigation is ongoing, and no further information can be released. Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for formal review.
