The Winamac Town Council members were given information on water and sewer rate studies when they met earlier this month.
A representative from Baker Tilly went over the reports with the council where a 20 percent rate increase is recommended for the sewer portion, which is a $12.00 increase based on 4,000 gallons residential usage. The increase can be done in phases. It has been about nine years since the last increase.
As for the water utility, there is a much shorter shortfall so there is a recommendation to increase rates 8 or 9 percent which is $3.00 a month increase for the average 4,000 gallon residential usage. Rates were reduced in 2022 due to the elimination of the URT tax, but it was nine years ago when the council last raised water rates.
The council members have not made any decisions yet, but they will come to a decision in the next couple of months.
