Knox-Center Township Fire Department firefighters were called to a house fire in the area of County Road 200 North and County Road 300 E Thursday, February 13 at 2:30 a.m. CT.
First arriving units arrived to find a single-story single family dwelling with fire throughout the structure. Firefighters initiated an interior attack to protect search crews. After a primary search was completed and proven to be negative, Knox firefighters were withdrawn from the structure due to deteriorating conditions. They remained on scene for approximately 4.5 hours before returning to service.
After a joint investigation involving Indiana State Fire Marshals Office and Knox-Center Township Firefighters, the fire’s origin was deemed to be in the attic space near the kitchen area. The cause is unknown however ceiling lights and exhaust fans could not be ruled out.
The Knox-Center Township Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department, Hamlet-Davis Township Fire Department, Koontz Lake-Oregon Township Fire Department, Washington Township Fire Department, Bass Lake-California Township Fire Department, Starke County EMS, Starke County Sheriff’s Department, Starke County Emergency Management Agency, REMC Electric, and the Starke County County Highway Department.
