Town of Hamlet Officials Talk to Starke County Commissioners about Annexing Property for Housing Development

Hamlet Town Council President Dave Kesvormas and Hamlet Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts brought forth information to the Starke County Commissioners this week about the town’s plan to annex county property into the town limits of Hamlet for a housing development.

Kesvormas said there is a parcel zoned agricultural in the area of Jefferson Street and Railroad Streets which will be annexed into the town limits of Hamlet and rezoned R-1. He asked the commissioners to transfer 1,000 feet of the proposed parcel for the project so the town can maintain the roads in the area before, during and after the construction project.

Kesvormas noted that the development will include 18 affordable, single-family homes with plans for a park with a pavilion and a fenced-in dog park. The homes will be “stick-built on foundations” and the plan is for the project to begin soon.

He said this is an extension of the 22 in ’22 initiative three years ago when the town council agreed to help grow the town by removing building permit fees and charging cost for sewer and water connection fees. There were also agreements for three months of free garbage and recycling service and water.

Commissioner Mike VanDeMark commented that he was not ready to make a decision during this week’s meeting and Commissioner Don Binkley wanted a chance to go by the area proposed for this project. The three commissioners unanimously approved a motion to table the request until the next meeting.
