Residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event to Take Place for Starke County

Starke County Environmental Management has announced a Residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection event to take place on Saturday, May 10th from 8:30am to 1pm Central time. This event will take place at the Recycle Center, located at 3835 East 250 North Suite B in Knox.

During the Household Hazardous Waste Collection event, residents of Starke County are encouraged to take the opportunity to get rid of any hazardous waste items they may have at home. This includes any unwanted products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients; or any item that require special care when being disposed.

A number of items are acceptable to dispose of during this event, including but not limited to oil and oil filters, batteries, pet products and flea collars, any poisons, chemicals and cleaners, old gasoline or antifreeze, fluorescent tubes, and more.

This event includes unlimited free appliance disposal, except for television sets which will come with a $20 fee per set disposed. Residents may dispose unlimited computer CPUs, keyboards, and printers, but only 1 computer monitor may be disposed of for free. While this event does accept medicines, this does not include narcotics or controlled substances, which can be disposed of at the county sheriff’s and police department drop-off bins.

Some items that will not be accepted at this event include tires, residential garbage, furniture, construction debris, or recyclables. Latex paint will also not be accepted as it is not considered hazardous waste. Starke County Environmental Management informs residents that latex paint can be disposed through your regular waste hauler after it has been allowed to dry out by either removing the lid or adding kitty litter.
