This upcoming Saturday, September 27th, is a Free Fishing Day across Indiana, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
September 27th is Indiana’s last free fishing day of the year. On Free Fishing Days, Indiana residents do not need a fishing license or a trout/salmon stamp in order to fish in the state’s public waters; however all other rules such as seasons, bag, and size limits do still apply.
Free fishing days are meant as an opportunity to learn how to fish, take family members fishing, or introduce a friend to fishing for the first time.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has links to a calendar with statewide fishing events, and fishing tips and videos. They encourage those who enjoy free fishing days to consider purchasing a fishing license in order to fish throughout the entire year. The license year runs from April 1st through March 31st of the following year. DNR notes that license sales help support research, habitat management, public access, fish stocking, and education programs.
