INDIANAPOLIS — Summer is here, and preparations for the Indiana State Fair are underway. If you’re looking for a fun way to get involved and give back, consider volunteering at the DNR State Fair Fishin’ Pond.

This upcoming Saturday, September 27th, is a Free Fishing Day across Indiana, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Normally, anglers would need a license or a trout/salmon stamp in order to fish in Indiana. The state’s Free Fishing Day, however, will take place on Saturday. Indiana residents do not need a fishing license or a trout/salmon stamp to fish for the day.
The Town of Culver’s Park Department will be hosting an event to teach fishing enthusiasts more about the craft.
Participants in the workshop can learn about fly-fishing, in specific. According to information from the Park Department, various line types, casting techniques, and safety will be reviewed.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is making a few changes for the spring fishing season.
The DNR says they will be stocking more than 55-thousand trout in the state’s waterways. In the past, rainbow trout have stocked in all but a few locations. Stocking efforts will be conducted prior to stream trout season beginning on April 25th.
As temperatures continue to fall, anglers of all ages may find themselves with the opportunity to ice-fish.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says thousands of Hoosiers go ice-fishing each year and are offering some tips to ensure safety.

The spring season has arrived, or so we think, and fisherman have taken to the open waters in the Kankakee Valley area. Indiana Conservation Officer Keith Wildeman encourages you to pay close attention to water levels when you’re out fishing.
“We’ve had a lot of rain here in the last week or so and we’re expecting some more so water levels are definitely going to be up,” said Wildeman. “If you’re out on the water, make sure you’re not out on unsafe levels especially on local rivers and streams. Water can be moving a lot faster and you can get yourself into trouble if you’re not careful. The water is still very cold.”
