STARKE COUNTY – Starke County Surveyor Gwen Rentz has been awarded a competitive scholarship to attend the Watershed Leadership Academy, a statewide professional program that provides advanced training in watershed science, drainage management, and community leadership.
The Watershed Leadership Academy equips local officials and natural resource professionals with the tools needed to understand and protect Indiana’s water resources. Participants receive specialized instruction in watershed planning, hydrology, floodplain dynamics, water quality protection, and the leadership skills required to build partnerships and guide long-term environmental initiatives.
“As Surveyor, safeguarding Starke County’s waterways and drainage system is one of my top priorities,” Rentz said. “This training will allow me to bring back the most current, science-based knowledge to support better decision-making, strengthen our regulated drain management, and help ensure responsible development across the county.”
In her role, Rentz oversees regulated drains, reviews development proposals, advises local planning and drainage boards, and works directly with landowners and local governments on drainage and water-resource issues. The skills gained through the Academy will enhance Starke County’s ability to address flooding concerns, improve water quality, and plan for growth in a way that aligns with environmental integrity.
“I am grateful for this opportunity and the confidence shown in me through this scholarship,” Rentz added. “This program will directly benefit Starke County by strengthening our capabilities in watershed management and allowing us to lead with a higher level of technical expertise.”
The Watershed Leadership Academy is recognized statewide for developing leaders in water resource protection and watershed planning. Upon completion, graduates earn a certification that reflects advanced competency in watershed science and collaborative environmental management.
