Heat wave predicted for this week in Northern Indiana

The United States National Weather Service of Northern Indiana, along with multiple other agencies, are advising citizens of the Northern Indiana area to be aware of high heat and humidity this upcoming week.

According to weather predictions, highs this week will be in the lower to mid 90s with heat indices between 100 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Overnight lows are predicted to be in the low to mid 70s.

This weather is predicted to begin today, Monday June 29th, and is expected to continue through at least this upcoming Thursday, July 2nd.

There is high confidence among meteorologists in the predictions of excessive heat and high humidity Monday through Thursday, with lower confidence heading into the weekend.

The National Weather Service shared tips for weathering the extreme heat: Make sure you have a working AC, and know where cooling shelters are available in your town. Check in on your family and friends. Stay hydrated, wear light-colored and lightweight clothing, and limit your exposure to being outside as much as possible.

Additional tips for hot weather: Never leave children or pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Additionally, recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Heat stroke signs include high body temperature, hot, dry, or damp skin; a fast, strong pulse; confusion; losing consciousness; nausea; headache; and dizziness. Those experiencing these symptoms should call 911 and cool down. Do not drink anything if you are experiencing heat stroke, as you may not be able to swallow properly and aspiration is a risk.
