Winamac Town Council Opens Bids for Community Crossings Grant Projects

Paving bids for Community Crossings Grant projects were opened during last week’s Winamac Town Council meeting. Members opened bids from the companies Walsh and Kelly, E&B Paving, Central Paving and Reith Riley when they met last Monday.

E&B Paving’s bid was the highest with a $146,865 total bid. Reith Riley’s provided the next highest with a total bid of about $159,239. Walsh and Kelly submitted the second lowest total bid at $139.993 and Central Paving’s total bid was the least expensive at about $121,537. All total bids included the company’s base bid plus an alternative bid. Continue reading

North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Highlights Summer School Opportunities

North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Annette Zupin outlined some summer school opportunities when school board members met Tuesday night.

One thing she highlighted was NJSP’s Countdown to Kindergarten which is an opportunity for incoming kindergarten students to familiarize themselves with the school experience. Dr. Zupin said it will be held for two weeks with students coming in for four days each week. That will run from July 16th through 19th and July 23rd through the 26th.

Additionally, Zupin mentioned that the Starke County Community Foundation provided a $7,000 donation to help fund the Kindergarten Countdown program, as they’ve done for the past few years. Continue reading

First National Bank of Monterey Provides Presentation to North Judson Town Council Members

The North Judson Town Council was informed that First National Bank of Monterey is willing to raise the town’s interest rate on their general fund when members met Monday night.

The Town currently has their general account at the First National Bank of Monterey and has recently been considering a switch over to First Farmers Bank and Trust. Continue reading

Local Veteran Receives Assistance from Knox VFW

A local veteran is expressing his gratitude to the Knox VFW for assisting him as he recovers from a stroke.

Robert Gonzalez is a Knox resident who reported that a stroke left him utilizing a wheelchair for the time being and it has limited his ability to venture outside his home.

Chris Kisela, a representative of VFW Post 748, stated that when VFW members met for their monthly meeting on Sunday, April 8th, they approved a request to build ramps at Gonzalez’s residence and contracted the work out to Ron Biddle. Continue reading

North Judson Town Marshal Kelly Fisher Reports Immediate Results from K9 Program

North Judson K9 Officer Rico Simpson and his K9 Partner Jimy have been very busy now that they’re out of training and patrolling the town. Town Marshal Kelly Fisher provided a brief synopsis of some of the work that the two have accomplished in their first week of deployment during Monday night’s town council meeting.

Since April 9th, K9 Jimy has already assisted with several traffic stops and indicated the presence of suspected narcotics, marijuana, heroin and drug paraphernalia. Continue reading

Winamac Clerk-Treasurer Shares Findings From Umbaugh’s Utilities Analysis

Winamac Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger reviewed the findings from Umbaugh’s budget report when town council members met last Monday.

The town’s financial advisors at Umbaugh looked at the current rates for the electric, water and wastewater utilities and then provided a projection of whether or not current rates will be able to sustain the accounts over the next five years. They also indicated whether or not the utility would see a positive or negative cash flow. Continue reading

North Judson San Pierre School Board to Meet Tonight

North Judson-San Pierre School Board members will receive information about the General Obligation Bond Resolution when they meet tonight at 7 p.m.

The technology plan, the wellness plan and the strategic and accountability plan will be considered as well. These plans were discussed in a work session earlier this month and will be up for first reading at tonight’s meeting. Continue reading

Culver Technical Review Committee Approves Amended PUD Application, Next Step Plan Commission Review

The Culver Technical Review Committee met with Developer Thomas Beste on Friday to go over his plan for the proposed Planned Unit Development at the site on State Road 17 and State Road 10.

Knox City Council Considers One Petition For Annexation and One for Vacation

Knox City Council amended their agenda to consider two petitions when they met last Tuesday. The first petition was from JW Hicks for voluntary annexation of a piece of real estate into the city of Knox. Members unanimously approved a motion to enter the petition into their minutes and to advertise for a public hearing over the request.

Members also addressed a request from business owner Tim Miller related a dual-purpose structure he’s trying to build on Pacific Avenue. Miller’s petition asks the city to vacate a 66-foot easement behind his property so he can meet the 40-foot set back requirement for rear-yards on commercial properties. Continue reading

Winamac Town Council Discusses Parking Concerns Downtown

Parking issues at a Winamac establishment were addressed when town council members met last Monday.Councilman Alvin Parish asked about addressing an issue with regular vehicles parking in the spots designated for motorcycles and golf carts at a downtown restaurant on Market Street.

Council President Tom Murray said he believed the police should be ticketing the vehicles but said they are currently unable to do so since there isn’t a specific town ordinance prohibiting the parking. Continue reading

The cemetery mowing service contract will be revisited during tonight’s North Judson Town Council meeting.

Town Marshal Kelly Fisher, Fire Chief and Code Compliance Officer Joe Leszek, Town Superintendent Marshall Horstmann and any other department heads in attendance will deliver reports to the council. Clerk-Treasurer Andrew Rowe will provide a report with relevant business regarding the town’s operations and Attorney Justin Schramm will be present to alert the council of any new legal updates. Knox Man Reportedly Spotted Defacing Campaign Sign Faces 10 Counts of Criminal Mischief

A Knox Man has been charged with 10 counts of criminal mischief and one count of reckless driving after he was reportedly spotted vandalizing a campaign sign Saturday afternoon.

According to a press release issued by the Knox City Police Department, shortly before 1:50 p.m. on April 14th, Knox Police Chief Harold Smith was traveling north bound in his personal  vehicle on Highway 35 just north of 200 S. As he was coming into Knox, he observed a vehicle parked on the west side of the highway. Continue reading

Knox Water Department Crews to Conduct Fire Hydrant Flushing Soon

Knox Water Department crews will begin flushing fire hydrants throughout the city on Monday, April 16th and work will continue through Thursday, April 19th. The work will be conducted during the day so motorists are asked to avoid driving through areas where they see employees working.

As a result of the hydrant flushing, tap water may appear brown, according to a press release from the Mayor’s Office. The release indicates that the water is safe to drink and can be cleared up by running cold water from a bathtub or outside faucet. Continue reading

Winamac Town Council Considers Adopting Amended Employee Handbook Ordinance

The 2018 employee handbook ordinance was up for adoption at the Winamac Town Council meeting Monday night.

At a meeting in March, council members found some inconsistencies with the document so they decided to send it back to the company New Focus for amendments before considering it for adoption. The inconsistency they discovered was related to grievance procedures. Continue reading

Today is the last day for the early bird registration for the Knox High School Life Skills Class Color Run! Early bird registration guarantees runners a t-shirt, race bib, color packet, and a “swag bag”.

The cost for early registration for a group of four or more is $20 while the cost for a single sign-up is $25. After today, registration will cost $30.

Knox Clerk-Treasurer Alerts City Council Members About Several Property Liens

Knox Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston informed city council members that liens have been made against 9 properties in the city for overdue sewer and sanitation bills.

At Tuesday night’s city council meeting Clerk-Treasurer Houston shared that sewer and sanitation liens were recently filed, in accordance with state statute. He said initially 16 property owners were notified of past due bills. Continue reading

Town Attorney Informs Winamac Officials They Will Have to Wait to Re-Certify the Town’s Districts

Winamac Town Council members were alerted about an overlooked law that took effect in 2012 regarding small town primary elections and districts when they met Monday night. Town Attorney Justin Schramm explained that the law requires towns under a population of 3,500 to pass an ordinance recertifying their districts two years after a decennial census is conducted. The last census took place in 2010.

Schramm stated, “Between 2012 and 2017 there had to have been some type of ordinance or resolution recertifying the districts within the Town of Winamac.” Continue reading
