The Oregon-Davis School Board is getting ready to hire a new superintendent. Board members will take comments on a proposed superintendent’s contract tonight. It calls for a base salary of $95,000 a year, plus benefits. The school board is expected to vote on the contract next Monday.

The Pulaski County Commissioners will consider health insurance and copier lease options this morning. The commissioners will be asked to approve a contract with Cardinal Copier Solutions. The company got a favorable recommendation from the county council last week, after it said it could save the county $30,000 a year.

The number of Hoosiers filing for unemployment benefits is down significantly from the peak in March. The week ending June 6, 23,604 initial unemployment claims were filed. That’s actually a slight increase from the week before but down from a peak of over 139,000 in March.

Some local libraries reopen to the public today. The Starke County Public Library System says it will allow up to 25 patrons at a time in its Henry F. Schricker Branch in Knox. It will be open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Hamlet, Koontz Lake, and San Pierre branches will be open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with up to five people allowed at a time.

The number of Marshall County residents who’ve tested positive for COVID-19 has now surpassed 300. Marshall County’s case count is at 301, according to Sunday’s report from the Indiana State Department of Health. That’s an increase of 16 from the day before.

Starke County dispatchers say one person was taken to the hospital in a single-vehicle crash on State Road 8 that resulted in a power outage. NIPSCO reported that more than 200 customers were still without power hours later.

Marshall County is reporting another 12 cases of COVID-19. A total of 287 Marshall County residents have tested positive as of Saturday’s report from the Indiana State Department of Health. Starke County had three more cases, bringing the total up to 51, while Pulaski County remains at 52. No new deaths were reported in any of those three counties.

The Pulaski County Election Board has finalized the results of last week’s primary. Clerk JoLynn Behny says that of the hundreds of mail-in ballots sent out, only two were returned after the deadline. She says a total of 35 ballots were rejected.

Firefighters and a hazmat crew were called to a farm equipment fire in Starke County Friday. It happened just after 5:00 p.m. in the 100 block of North Range Road, according to Knox-Center Township Fire Chief Kenny Pfost. He says two liquid fertilizer trailers caught on fire.

A South Bend man faces multiple charges after allegedly driving 100 miles per hour without a license with a loaded firearm in the vehicle. LaPorte County Police say they pulled over a vehicle driven by Ankoma H. Kirk, 20, near U.S. 20 and County Road 350 East, just before 10:00 p.m. Thursday. During the traffic stop, officers say they found a loaded firearm in the passenger compartment.

Mayor Dennis Estok says the shelters, playground and exercise equipment, skate park, walking trails, and bathrooms are all open as of Friday. The splash pad is open from noon to 6:00 p.m., but it’s limited to 25 children at a time.
