A pair of simultaneous brush fires ended up burning nearly 160 acres Tuesday but managed to avoid any structures. That’s according to a Facebook post from the North Judson-Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters were called to the area of county roads 800 South and 150 West Tuesday afternoon. Five fire departments were eventually on the scene, while three others were placed on standby.

Bass Lake-area residents will have to wait until next week to weigh in on a rezoning request that would pave the way for a potential solar farm. A company called Starke Solar, LLC is asking Starke County to rezone more than 800 acres in California and North Bend townships on the south side of Bass Lake, mainly from residential to agricultural. That, in turn, would allow for the installation of solar panels.

The SYSCO property near Hamlet is set to go up for auction tomorrow, but the town’s ability to control what goes there may be limited. The discussion came up during a recent town council meeting, after local landowner Lee Nagai apparently asked county officials what steps would be required to build a hog farm there.

The Starke County Park Board will continue narrowing down the list of potential Yellow River kayak launch sites tonight. Engineer Mark Wilson with Jones Petrie Rafinski presented a kayak launch feasibility study last month. Now, board members are deciding which sites to pursue.

Derrick and Abbie Stalbaum are seeking a property tax abatement for a facility they’re building on County Road 1050 West in Rich Grove Township. A public hearing will be held before council members make a final decision.

The Eastern Pulaski School Board will consider the 2020-2021 teacher contract tonight. Under the proposed agreement, teachers rated effective or highly effective would get a $1,000 pay raise. Board members will also make an appointment to the Pulaski County Public Library Board and give their permission to sign agreements for alternative services and private school placements.

In September, Mayor Dennis Estok promised that there would be no more extensions, but when the board met again last month, members unanimously approved a third change order. It pushes substantial completion to this Thursday and final completion to December 11, while raising the cost by more than another $45,000.

The Town of Winamac’s 2021 budget was recently approved by the town council. The total budget adds up to more than $1.3 million. Just over $973,000 of that is the General Fund. More than $135,000 is budgeted for parks, and $65,000 is in the Motor Vehicle Highway Fund. Winamac’s 2021 budget now goes to the state for final approval.

State health officials are making sure they’re ready for a COVID-19 vaccine to arrive in mid-November, but whether it will actually get here by then remains to be seen. During Wednesday’s COVID-19 briefing, Indiana Department of Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lindsay Weaver said the state’s been asking hospital systems to help identify potential distribution sites.

The SCILL Center’s new Fire & Rescue Program has gotten a boost, thanks to the Town of North Judson. Back in September, the town council agreed to let the program use a 1979 Ford fire truck that the North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department has been unable to sell, as long as the SCILL Center would maintain it. On Monday, Fire Chief Joe Leszek told the town council Monday that the paperwork was being finalized, and the fire department planned to hand the truck over to the SCILL Center this week.

A new contest aims to help residents get out and enjoy Starke County, while still keeping safe from COVID-19. The Starke County Young Professionals Group has put together a game they’re calling Out & About Bingo. Residents can check off activities on a Bingo card for a chance to win prizes.
