Firefighters Return to Scene of Friday Morning Blaze

 
 

The Knox-Center Township Fire Department was called back to the scene of a fire they spent six hours battling early Friday morning. The vacant home in the 1300 South block of 300 East, just south of Binkley Drive apparently rekindled just after 5 last night. Firefighters were on the scene for about 90 minutes. The cause of Friday morning’s fire is still under investigation.

Officers Bust Underage Drinking Party in Knox, 16 Arrested

 
 

A report of an underage drinking party at a home on Tribue Drive in Knox early Sunday morning resulted in 16 arrests for illegal possession of alcohol. Deputies from the Starke County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the North Judson and Knox Police Departments responded just before 2 a.m. In addition to the arrests, a 15-year-old was taken home and released into the custody of his or her parents, according to a news release from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department.

Marshall County Council to Meet Today

  
 
The Marshall County Council will meet today with Prosecutor David Holmes who is expected to discuss a full-time clerk position, request a waiver of employee probationary period and submit a request for a copier.

Sheriff Tom Chamberlin will also appear before the council to ask for a waiver of employee probationary period. Jay Bahr, the executive director of the Marshall County Economic Development Commission, will have an update for the council members.

NJSP Students to Hear Presentation on Farming Technology and Innovation

The animal science students from the North Judson-San Pierre High School will hear from Dr. Megan Nemechek of Rensselaer Swine Services in a presentation in which the students will learn how farmers are using innovation and technology to grow healthier food.

The presentation will be Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 8:35 a.m. at the high school where Dr. Nemechek will highlight how ongoing advancements in agricultural science are helping farmers raise better food while using fewer natural resources than ever before. She said farmers use 41 percent less water and 78 percent less land to raise pigs than they did 50 years ago.

Indiana’s pork industry contributes more than $3 billion to the state’s economy each year.

Knox School Board Spotlights Boys Tennis Team

The Knox Community School Board members spotlighted the boys tennis team during their meeting Monday night.

Superintendent A.J. Gappa commented that it was the first time in the team’s history the team members were the winners of the Northern State Conference.

“The tennis team was here with their coaches, Mark Krom and Dick Wagner, to be introduced to the board. They not only set a school record for the first conference championship, but they had some individual records. The team had the most wins in history and they had the most consecutive wins. They also won the tournament that Knox hosted for the first time. It was a very good year for the tennis team. It was nice to be able to give them some recognition,” stated Gappa.

IU Health is offering discounted screening mammograms at a number of locations in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout the entire month of October. The mammograms are offered for $95 at several locations; to schedule an appointment, contact IU Health LifePlex Imaging at (800) 654-4841, ext. 2444 or IU Health Starke Hospital at (574) 772-1177.

According to the American Cancer Society, mammograms are the most effective and valuable tool for early detection of breast cancer, and Katie Sarver, wellness outreach program manager for IU Health LaPorte, agrees.

1st Source Bank to Provide Aid to Clients During Shutdown

  
 
1st Source Bank this week announced plans to provide aid to clients affected by the government shutdown. The standoff in Congress has caused federal government employees to not be paid if they are considered “non-essential,” and businesses are also impacted if their government contracts are in limbo or if payment is not being made for work that has been completed or is in process. This lack of pay could cause hardship to the bank’s clients who are tied to the federal government.

LaPorte Man Arrested on Child Endangerment Charge

 
 
A LaPorte man police say was too intoxicated to stand when he showed up at his son’s Pop Warner Football practice faces felony child neglect charges. Police were called to Kesling Middle School in LaPorte Thursday evening and found Lance Dieken, 39, staggering around the field. The arrest report notes he smelled of alcohol and appeared intoxicated. A 7-year-old boy was waiting in Dieken’s pickup truck for him to get his 6-year-old son from practice. Dieken reportedly told the police he was going to drive the kids home, but they told him he wouldn’t be allowed to drive due to his impaired state. The childrens’ mother was called and came to pick them up. Dieken also faces a misdemeanor public intoxication charge.

Traffic Stop Leads to Cocaine Bust in Marshall County

A Goshen man is jailed on a $10,000 bond in Marshall County after police there reportedly found cocaine in his car after a traffic stop. An officer from the Marshall County Police Department pulled a car driven by Miguel A. Sanchez, 40, over Monday around 11:30 p.m. on U.S. 31 near 11th Road for an expired temporary license plate. The arrest report indicates the officer found cocaine during the investigation. Formal charges are pending with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.

City of Knox to Refund $200 BZA Fee

The city of Knox will be refunded a $200 fee from the Board of Zoning Appeals for Gary Dulin after the city council this week approved the refund due to a city ordinance that had been overlooked before the fee was charged. Mayor Rick Chambers told the council that Plan Commissioner Bruce Williams had been working with Dulin on Water Street regarding a request from Dulin to keep horses on his land, and charged a $200 BZA fee in order for the matter to be reviewed.

LaPorte Police Nab Juvenile Escapees

 
 
Freedom was short lived for two of the three boys who escaped from the LaPorte County Juvenile Services Center Tuesday night. The boys were reported missing around 10 p.m. About three hours later police got a call from someone who spotted one of the boys in the 800 block of 3rd Street. The youngster was reportedly wearing all blue clothing and no shoes. Officers canvassed the area and found two boys hiding in a fenced-in area adjacent to Bethany Lutheran Church at 1st and H streets. Both boys, ages 13 and 17, were arrested on charges of escape and resisting law enforcement.

LaPorte Police Department Investigating Jewelry Store Theft

 
 

LaPorte Police are searching for a man and a woman they say are responsible for the theft of rings valued at $5,500 from a jewelry store there on Monday afternoon. Staff at Engrstrom Jewelers called the police when they noticed a tray of sapphire rings missing. Security footage from the store shows a black male reaching over the display counter, removing the tray and concealing it. Store employees say the man came in around 2:50 Monday afternoon with a black woman who asked to be sized for a bracelet. The theft happened when the store staff was retrieving supplies to do so. When they came back out the couple reportedly left hastily, saying their car was done being repaired and they were only window shopping. The jewelry is described as blue sapphire gems set on both yellow and white gold bands. Store employees say the man and woman were both older and black with heavyset builds. Starke Commissioners Approve Boa Shores Addition

  
 
The Starke County Commissioners this week approved a motion to allow an addition to be made to the Boa Shores area near Bass Lake. The Woodland Shores subdivision does not include lake access and is located off of County Road 625 East, and according to a representative of the planning commission, the drainage requirements of the county have been met and a public hearing was previously held with no objections voiced.

Out of Gas Meth Offenders Jailed Without Bond

 
 
A man and women whose car ran out of gas on Linden Road just north of U.S. 6 in Marshall County Wednesday afternoon are jailed without bond after police reportedly found evidence of meth manufacture in their vehicle. An officer responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle spoke to the driver, Billy Ottinger, and his passenger, Kay Fisher. They gave him permission to search the vehicle, according to the arrest report, and the officer found several precursors used to make meth. The Indiana State Police were called in to assist, and both Ottinger and Fisher were arrested for possession of precursors and dealing/manufacturing methamphetamine.

Culver Town Council Holds Public Hearing for 2014 Budget

The Culver Town Council this week held their public hearing for the 2014 budget and Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim explained to the board that the proposed budget is just under $2 million, coming in at $1,945,026 – an increase over last year’s budget, which came in at $1,847,913. She said most of the total increase, which came out to $97,113, is a result of an anticipated rise in healthcare benefits costs.

Women’s Fair Scheduled at Blue Chip Stardust Event Center

 
 
The largest free women’s event in LaPorte County is coming up on Tuesday, and women from around the area are invited to attend. The 12th Women’s Fair offers the public new exhibits, preventive screenings and wellness information on Tuesday, Oct. 15 from until 7 p.m. at the Blue Chip Stardust Event Center in Michigan City.

Features at this year’s fair include AmeriBreast—the world’s only walk-through tour of an inflatable, interactive human breast with an emphasis on breast cancer education and prevention (visit interactiveexhibits.com to learn more). Countless informative exhibits and free blood glucose, blood pressure, bone density, foot, hearing, oral cancer and clinical breast exam screenings will be offered, and everyone who attends and fills out a survey will get a free gift.
