The Center for Disease control said that Indiana is one of the three worst states for overdose fatality reports because of inconsistencies in the way coroners test and fill out death certificates. Slusser Pleads Guilty During Trial
The defendant in a trial in Starke Circuit Court pleaded guilty during the final witness’s testimony Thursday afternoon.
Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff said Rodney Slusser pleaded guilty to charges of attempted battery with a deadly weapon as a Level 5 felony and criminal mischief as a Class B misdemeanor. With his guilty plea, Bourff moved to dismiss the other counts in the case which include another felony count of attempted battery with a deadly weapon, two counts of resisting law enforcement, and a misdemeanor count of reckless driving.
Local Red Cross Volunteer Heading to Houston
A local woman who volunteered during past natural disasters such as the Henryville Tornado and Hurricane Sandy will be deploying to Houston this weekend to assist the Red Cross with mass care efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Sherry Fagner is a former Incident Management Team member of the District 2 Task Force who now serves as the Lead Disaster Action Team member for Pulaski and Starke Counties. North Judson-San Pierre Program in Place to Assist Student Achievement
A program implemented this school year allows 7th and 8th grade students at North Judson-San Pierre more time to study the subjects of language-arts and math. The 7th and 8th Grade Academy is approximately 70 minutes of Math and 70 minutes of English class daily. Three Injured in Two-Car Accident in Grovertown
Three people were injured in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of U.S. 30 and State Road 23 that happened just after 7 a.m. Thursday. according to the information via localaccidentreports.
Starke County police say heavy damage was sustained to a passenger vehicle and an SUV when emergency responders arrived at the scene. Indiana’s public access counselor has been asked to weigh in on a dispute over public documents in Railroad Township. According to an advisory opinion issued by Public Access Counselor Luke H. Britt, Megan Korous filed a complaint with his office back in June, alleging that Township Trustee Mandy Thomason violated the Access to Public Records Act.

West Nile Virus Increases across the State
Officials with the Indiana State Department of Health are keeping an eye on the West Nile Virus activity in the state.
As of Aug. 18, 261 pools of water tested positive for the West Nile Virus in 58 counties this year. According to statistics compiled by the Indiana State Department of Health, three mosquito infections were separately reported in Starke County, La Porte County and Fulton County. One mosquito infection was reported in Porter County while there were no reports in Marshall County or Pulaski County.

Denney Street Fire Extinguished Within Minutes
A small fire broke out in a home in the 1000 Block of Denney Street, yesterday evening. The Knox Police Department was the first on the scene and reported seeing smoke. The fire department received the call at 5:47 p.m. and rushed to the home in the Binkley subdivision. The fire was contained to the kitchen and was extinguished within 5 minutes. Starke County EMS assisted at the scene and fortunately no injuries were reported.
Former Pulaski County Council Member Chosen for Board of Commissioners
A new Pulaski County Commissioner has been selected. Mike McClure was chosen during a Republican Party caucus Tuesday. It took a couple rounds of voting to narrow down the field of nine candidates that included a mix of current and former elected officials, as well as a few self-proclaimed non-politicians.
