West Central School Board Renewed Insurance & Reviewed 2018 Budget
The West Central School board held a hearing for their 2018 budget and reviewed insurance quotes for 2017-18 school year during their meeting Thursday night.
Superintendent Dan Street went over various line items and commented that the proposed budget was very similar to the 2017 budget. Board President Jeff Lowry closed the hearing after no questions or comments were presented by the board. Continue reading

North Judson Trash Pick-up Rescheduling Causes Influx of Calls
Due to the Labor Day holiday, North Judson recycling and trash pick-up has been rescheduled to today. Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Collins said she was receiving many calls concerning that matter over the last few days. Bid Opening for Starke County Bridge Projects Delayed
The bids that were to be opened Tuesday during the Starke County Commissioners meeting for Bridge #154 over the Robbins Ditch on 100 E. has been delayed until Monday, Oct. 2.
Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler explained that funding is dependent on the announcement of Community Crossing grant awards which has been delayed.
Winamac Park Board Must Explore Different Grant Options for Pool Project

Starke County Commissioners Choose Vendor to Seal Parking Lot
Starke County Maintenance Director James Coad presented quotes to the Starke County Commissioners for sealing the parking lot at Annex Building No. 1.
Quotes were given in the amount of $1,700 from Les Jensen and $2,400 from Scott Lehiy. The commissioners chose to go with Scott Lehiy for this job as Jensen completed a recent job. Coad said he would like to give Lehiy the work and the commissioners thought they would support both local businesses. The commissioners approved a motion to award Lehiy the bid to do the work.

Protecting Hoosiers from investment fraud is the goal of a video produced in partnership with the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office. “$cammed: Investment Fraud Revealed” aims to show that investment schemes don’t just target large-scale investors on Wall Street, but also regular people here in Indiana.

Hurricane Harvey Relief Effort Update from Local Volunteer
The last time Sherry Fagner, spoke with WKVI, she was two days away from joining the Red Cross in Houston to assist with mass care efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Fagner is a Lead Disaster Action Team member for Pulaski and Starke Counties as well as a long-time Red Cross Volunteer. Pulaski County Justice Center in Need of Fire Alarm Upgrades
The technology at the Pulaski County Justice Center is showing its age. Currently, the sheriff’s department is in the process of upgrading the computer system that controls the doors, after it had a number of glitches in recent weeks. Now, the building’s fire alarm is having similar problems.
Starke County Commissioners Select EMA Director
The Starke County Commissioners are prepared to offer the EMA Director position to one of the many candidates they interviewed for the opening.
Commissioner Kathy Norem commented that all of the applicants brought a varying degree of strengths that would have worked for what the commissioners had in mind for an EMA Director. Norem thought Danielle Stormy stood out as the candidate that would best fit the role for Starke County. Stormy has a degree in meteorology with a minor in emergency management.
Updates to North Judson’s Phone System are Complete
As of today, the updated phone system for the Town of North Judson will be up and running. The fire department was the final number scheduled to be added to the directory and it will be accessible today. Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Collins said this switch will not only save money, but it will also save her and other department heads a lot of time, while also making it easier for citizens to contact specific departments. Knox Community School Board Members Approved More Sandbox Donations
The Knox Community School board approved two donations for the School Corporation in their meeting Wednesday evening. During the last school board meeting in August, board members approved a $500 donation from the Starke County Community Foundation for the purchase of a new sandbox for the pre-school program. In last night’s meeting, board members approved donations of sand and delivery costs to complete the playground addition. Continue reading
Full Weekend of Events at Kersting’s Cycle Center
Kersting’s Cycle Center and Museum has a plethora of fun things to look forward to this coming weekend. To start it all off, Starke County A.B.A.T.E will be hosting its Autumn Slam, a two-day event that begins Friday when gates open at 7 p.m. EST. The event is open to anyone 21 or older and the cost is $15 dollars per person. That fee grants access to food, bike games, field events, entertainment and primitive camping on Friday and Saturday. Winamac Park Board to Get Update on Pool Grant Application
The Winamac Park Board will get an update tonight on grant funding for its swimming pool rebuilding project. The town is applying for $200,000 in matching money from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. The total cost of rebuilding the pool is expected to be between $500,000 and $600,000.
McClure Takes Seat on Pulaski County Board of Commissioners
Pulaski County’s new District 3 commissioner was officially sworn in Tuesday. Mike McClure took the oath of office during the commissioners’ regular meeting.
Over 300 Resident Signatures Received in Favor of Amending NJ Animal Ordinance
Although a petition was presented during the North Judson City Council’s regular session, no further action was taken on the animal ordinance. The Council members say further research must be done before any changes can be made.
Coroner Pay to be Discussed at Next Commissioners Meeting
The coroner’s pay will be discussed at the Sept. 18 meeting of the Starke County Commissioners as Coroner Dannie Hoffer is also asking for an increase for his deputies.
The commissioners were prepared to present an increase in pay for the coroner in 2018, but when Hoffer asked about an increase for his deputies next year the commissioners decided to take a step back and research the request before making any formal offer.
