The Oregon-Davis School Board still hopes to have a permanent superintendent in place by July 1. Greg Briles left the corporation at the end of December for a position in Delphi. The board hired retired New Prairie Superintendent Jim Dermody to fill that role on an interim basis. Continue reading

Plans for Monterey School Building Sale Clear Another Hurdle

The Culver Community Schools Corporation’s path to selling the Monterey School Building has suddenly gotten a bit easier. Last month, school corporation attorney Jeff Houin told the school board the building would have to be registered with the Indiana Department of Education, which would place it on a statewide list of unused buildings. The idea there is to give potential charter schools a chance to lease the building. Knox School Board Discusses 2016-17 Calendar

Knox-School-Board-2014When the Knox School Board met last night, Knox School Superintendent A.J. Gappa discussed the calendar for the 2016-2017 school year. A starting date of August 4, 2016 for students was proposed; a fall break of October 17-21 or October 10-14, subject to a state required testing schedule; Christmas break, December 21 to January 5; spring break, March 21-31. Additional HIV Cases Prompt Warning from State

healthyAdditional HIV cases in southern Indiana have prompted a warning from the Indiana Department of Health about risky behavior. The four new cases bring the total number of people who have tested positive for HIV to 188. State officials say the outbreak has been linked to shared needles among injection drug users. All of the newly diagnosed cases are contacts of cases previously identified in the outbreak, according to health department officials. Continue reading

Starke County Jail Prepares for D.O.C. Inmates

Starke County Justice CenterOfficials at the Starke County Jail are preparing for an influx of inmates this week. They are Department of Correction prisoners who have been sentenced to an extensive drug treatment program. Starke County was approved late last year for the state’s first non-prison-based therapeutic community, thanks to the efforts of State Sen. Jim Arnold, Starke Circuit Judge Kim Hall and others. Sheriff Bill Dulin says there’s plenty of room in the jail for up to 48 D.O.C. inmates without displacing any local prisoners. Continue reading
