Starke County EMS Director Interviewing Paramedics, Issuing Recertifications

Paramedics are needed everywhere in the state and nationwide. Starke County EMS Director Travis Clary told the commissioners this week that they are interviewing paramedics for two full-time opportunities.

“We implemented a new standard of hiring which requires a written test, skills test and oral interview to get the best candidate possible,” said Clary. “If nothing else, we can get more part-time paramedics, but really no luck so far. It seems like there’s a shortage nationwide. I know Pulaski County and LaPorte County are kinda hurting. So, that’s where we’re at with that.”

Community Cantata Choir Call Outs Coming Soon

Although the Community Cantata Choir won’t have their final performance until Christmastime, rehearsals will be underway soon. Event coordinators and program directors Nan Folkers and Brian Liechty are still working out this year’s theme and the schedule for official try-out dates and subsequent rehearsals. IRS Officials Offer Security Tips for Personal Information

The Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers to protect their personal, financial and tax information.

They say personal information should be treated like cash and should not be handed out to just anyone. This includes Social Security, credit card, bank and utility account numbers, all of which can be used to steal money or open new accounts. Taxpayers are urged to think about whether requests for personal information are truly necessary, as scammers will do anything possible to appear both trustworthy and legitimate. Continue reading

County Officials Shopping for Building Inspector Truck

Starke County Building Inspector Terry Stephenson could soon have a new-to-him, county-issued vehicle. County Council President Freddie Baker says the one he’s currently driving is “junk.” He says Stephenson recently could not get it to go over 30 miles per hour and nearly got stranded recently. Baker says Stephenson also has to use his wife’s car because his county vehicle was not running. Continue reading

Knox Council to Meet Tonight

City_of_Knox_LogoThe Knox City Council has a light agenda for their meeting this evening. There are no specific action items listed on the advance copy. The council discussed amendments to the city’s zoning ordinance two weeks ago to allow tattoo parlors downtown, but did not take action. Concerns were raised during that meeting about preserving the downtown’s historic district, which was cited as a reason for the 500 foot rule that was passed in 2009. Continue reading

Knox Mayor Outlines Road Project Proposals

City_of_Knox_LogoThe City of Knox hopes to leverage matching grant money from the state to complete up to five road improvement projects. Mayor Dennis Estok told the city council last night each is a separate proposal on the application that’s being submitted to the Indiana Department of Transportation. The state awarded one-time Local Option Income Tax distributions to cities, towns and counties, on the condition that 75 percent of that money must be used for infrastructure improvements.
