Several members of the WKVI staff are heading to Indianapolis tomorrow for the 26th Annual Indiana Broadcasters Association Spectrum Awards. General Manager Jerry Curtis said WKVI is a finalist in two prestigious categories.

“Every year the association recruits entries, audio projects from stations in cities, towns and markets across the state. This year we’re fortunate enough to be a finalist in the Station of the Year category, and also we’ve been recognized as a finalist in the public affairs program for our Sunday program, Kankakee Valley Viewpoints. It’s on Sunday at noon. We won’t find out until the dinner Saturday night, but we’re looking forward to being there and celebrating in whatever fashion,” Curtis said.

Bremen Convenience Store Sells Winning Powerball Ticket

powerball_power_playIf you picked up a Powerball ticket for Wednesday night’s drawing at a Marshall County convenience store, you may be a millionaire. Hoosier Lottery officials say a ticket worth $1 million was purchased at the Speedway on West Plymouth Street in Bremen. It matches the first five numbers, but not the Powerball. Those numbers are: 1, 5, 10, 15, 49, and the Powerball is 22.

Boa Shores Issue Raised at Starke Commissioners Meeting

  
 
A Boa Shores resident approached the Starke County Commissioners at their meeting this week with a complaint against a fellow resident of Boa Shores. Guy Tardi told the commissioners that another resident has been claiming the “Boa Shores park,” an area technically part of the county right-of-way, as his own private property, preventing residents from using it for picnics and other events.

North Judson to Develop Strategic Plan

  
 
The town of North Judson may soon have a document to help guide its development for years to come, as Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry told WKVI that the town is working on its strategic plan.

While there have been no specific details released yet about the upcoming plan development, Henry said the town is getting information from the Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission and it’s likely that officials will work with KIRPC to develop the document. However, nothing has been finalized.

Henry also noted that utility crews started Monday on the first fall leaf pickup for the community, and they will continue with that this week until they’ve made their rounds of the town. Henry said the town will likely have another round of leaf pickups after the leaves have finished falling.

Veterans Day is Monday; Many Banks, Other Offices Closed

 
 

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11, and while many offices will be closed including government buildings, banks and others, some offices will remain open to conduct business. In Starke County, all government offices will be closed on Veterans Day. In Pulaski County, however, the building department will remain open from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. while other county offices are closed for the day.

After years of planning and development, the time has finally come for the groundbreaking ceremony for the Starke County Sheriffs Department and Detention Center. The county commissioners announced that the groundbreaking will be held today from 10 to 11 a.m. and is open to the public. The ceremony will be held at the 24-acre construction site at the corner of State Road 8 and County Road 550 East in Knox. The proposed 146-bed facility will replace the 63-bed facility currently in use, a necessity according to Sheriff Oscar Cowen. He said the county is currently housing between 15 and 20 prisoners per day in other facilities and officials are desperate to get the facility finished. Continue reading

North Judson Town Board Updated on Salt Shed, Town Garage

  
 
The town of North Judson is making some progress in constructing the new salt shed, according to Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry. She said the concrete floor has been poured for the shed, and materials for the building will be delivered on Nov. 27 with construction expected to begin on Dec. 3.

Henry said a public hearing will also be held next Tuesday, Nov. 12, to provide details on the upcoming lease agreement for the soon-to-be-constructed town garage. The hearing has been advertised in the paper, and afterward, Henry said the board will be able to sign the lease agreement.

Hopefully, Henry said, construction of the town garage will begin this year.

Starke EMS Seeking New Ambulance; Matter Goes to Council

The Starke County Commissioners this week gave the EMS department permission to request a new ambulance from the council. EMS Director Paul Mathewson approached the commissioners along with Mary Lynn Ritchie of the department. Mathewson explained that he would like to increase the number of shift captains as of the first of the year, and he has been working with Council President Dave Pearman on the next steps to get a new ambulance.

Gov. Mike Pence Presents Grant Funds to Knox School Officials

 
 
A year after being elected, Gov. Mike Pence paid a visit to Knox High School to announce the distribution of funds aimed at keeping students across Indiana safe.

“The Knox Community School Corporation has been awarded a grant for $50,000. This is the maximum allowable grant. It represents strong leadership in the corporation, and a real commitment by this community to make sure our schools are about learning and create a safe environment for our kids,” said Pence.

The Pulaski County Commissioners this week authorized a company to acquire quotes from three possible carriers of liability, casualty and workman compensation insurance. Pam Boor-Leeman approached the commissioners and explained that while there are seven primary companies involved in carrying this type of coverage, only three of them are real options. She said the primary issue with providing coverage is the county jail.

Knox School Board Spotlights Donation Efforts at the High School

The Knox Community School Board spotlighted the efforts of the high school science club for their recent donation to the food pantry in Starke County. Superintendent A.J. Gappa said it was a pretty unique donation.

“Mrs. Wood, one of our science club sponsors, has on her property a number of apple trees. Members of the science club went out and picked over 250 pounds of apples and donated those apples to the food pantry for distribution to those in need,” said Gappa.

Report Indicates First 8 Years Are Critical For Children’s Success

  
 
A recent report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation has indicated that half of Hoosier kids 8 and under are living in poverty, presenting dramatic challenges for kids in developing appropriate skills for success. According to Dianna Wallace of the Indiana Association for the Education of Young Children, Indiana has a lot of room for improvement, but the state is starting to focus on the needs of young children. She said Indiana’s new Early Learning Advisory Committee held its inaugural meeting last month.
