Officials say he has undergone surgery after a sprint car accident at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Monday night. He suffered two broken bones in his right leg as a result of the accident where he struck a spun lapped car that sent his sprint car tumbling. Continue reading

North Judson Hostage Situation Ends Peacefully

A tense evening in North Judson ended with the arrest of a 48-year-old resident who is accused of firing shots inside his Talmer Avenue residence. Warren Chapman initially refused to surrender when officers from the North Judson Police Department arrived at his home, which is located just west of Brantwood’s and across the highway from the former NJ Foods store. Police Chief Doug Vessley requested assistance from the Starke and Pulaski County SWAT Team, and volunteer firefighters barricaded the streets in the surrounding area. When SWAT team members entered the home, Vessley says they found Chapman in the basement. He surrendered without incident and was taken to jail. Charges are pending.

Two Arrested After Warrant Service Incident

 
 
A warrant arrest situation could have been a lot worse if not for quick action by deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

Three deputies arrived at the Cale Street Apartments in Lapaz to take a wanted felon into custody Sunday afternoon. When the officers arrived at the scene, they witnessed the suspect, Christopher Bunch, flee on foot and enter a pickup. Continue reading

Off-Road Vehicle Safety Remains a Concern

 
 

An off-road vehicle crash that killed three young people in Clay County is a reminder that ATV safety remains a concern.

A 22-year-old and two children under the age of two were killed when the vehicle struck a concrete culvert wall adjacent to a roadway. A post-crash fire consumed the vehicle. The two children were instantly killed by the cause of blunt force trauma while the operator was airlifted to a hospital and later died. One other passenger remains in the hospital in serious condition.

Missing LaPorte Man Found Dead in Ditch

 
 
A man reported missing from LaPorte was found deceased yesterday afternoon by a mowing crew contractor in a grassy ditch on I-94. At approximately 2:08 p.m., detectives from the Indiana State Police and LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department responded to I-94 eastbound, roughly one mile west of the Portage exit, where they found the body located in a grassy ditch just south of I-94.

The Starke County Highway Department has been staying busy, as the department recently finished their third cycle of mowing and are well into the fourth, according to Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler. Ritzler told the commissioners that they’ve also finished their chip seal operations, which ended on July 25, thanks in a large part to one highway department employee who stepped up to the plate in a big way, helping to chip seal 30 miles in less than two weeks.

It’s time again for Pulaski County to prepare for their next round of bridge inspections and Highway Superintendent Mark Fox presented eight proposals for the work at the county commissioners’ meeting Monday night. Fox told the commissioners that it would be idea to make a “scoring team,” a committee to evaluate the proposals and ensure that they are comparing apples to apples and each proposal meets the required specs.

Marshall County Highway Superintendent Gives Update to Commissioners

  
 
Marshall County Highway Superintendent Neal Haeck told the commissioners this week that the summer mowing activity is finishing up. He explained that more areas around Plymouth will be mowed soon as the Blueberry Festival nears. Most of the other trouble areas in the county have been mowed.

Haeck also noted that he’s gotten several complaints that intersections with tall corn have been dangerous for travelers. He said that they have cut some stalks of corn back to aid in the safety of sight for drivers, but his workers haven’t had to do much of that. Haeck added that he’s not attempting to hurt any agriculture business in the county, he just wants drivers in Marshall County to have safer intersections.

North Judson Town Wide Yard Sale Approaching; Town Selling Old Signs

 
 
The town of North Judson is gearing up for their town-wide yard sale event, planned for Saturday, Aug. 10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry said they currently have about 46 people in town signed up with five more people outside of town registered for yard sales, and Henry said they’re working on putting the maps together to have them available on Friday with a list of yard sale locations.

Active Shooter Training Spotlighted by Knox Community School Board

 
 
The Knox Community School Board spotlighted the recent active shooter training held at the Knox Middle School. High School Assistant Principal Dr. Michael Bendicsen, who helped organize this session, said it helped the administrators get a handle on safety issues before the start of school.

“We wanted to focus on some school safety training before the school year started,” commented Bendicsen. “The Indiana State Police sponsored the training and they also collaborated with local law enforcement. We had about five counties represented, numerous schools and first responders.”

Shop with a Cop Event a Huge Success

  
 
The Kankakee Valley Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #129 conducted a successful Shop with a Cop event on Sunday.

FOP President Chris Kisela said the members were able to assist 61 Starke County children purchase new school clothes and school supplies. The event was held at Kohl’s in Valparaiso.

Each child got to spend $100 to $125 on new items for school.

Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart was injured in an accident with five laps to go at a sprint car race at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Monday night.

A lapped car had spun and stopped and Stewart had nowhere to go. His car hit the lapped car which flipped Stewart’s sprint car. He was assisted from his car by emergency officials, transported to a local hospital and underwent surgery to repair a broken leg. Reports indicate that he suffered a broken tibia and fibula in the crash.

Hamlet Man Faces LaPorte County Drunk Driving Charge

A Hamlet man faces a felony drunk driving charge after an early morning traffic stop in LaPorte Saturday morning. Police there pulled a Ford Ranger driven by William Conner, 39, at the corner of Jackson and State Streets over at 2:36 a.m. because a headlight wasn’t working and the registration belonged to another vehicle. He was arrested on felony and misdemeanor drunk driving charges as well as driving while suspended and having a false or fictitious registration.

Information About Fatal Plane Crash in Starke County Released

 
 

A preliminary crash incident report from a fatal plane crash at the Starke County Airport in Knox on July 29 has been released by the National Transportation Safety Board.

A plane flown by James A. W. Evans III of Stafford, Va. was the fourth in a series of five planes that were flying from Fredericksburg, Va. to the Experimental Aircraft Association Airventure fly-in in Wisconsin. A stop at the Starke County Airport was planned for refuel, but was not part of an official flight plan or log. The pilots were going to stay the night near Knox and continue their journey the following day.

Starke Commissioners Receive Bass Lake Beach Update

The Starke County Commissioners received a report regarding the Bass Lake Beach and Campground during their regular meeting yesterday morning and were informed by County Sanitarian Chris Dalton that all violations that had been found at the business have been addressed and corrected. Dalton presented two inspection reports, one from July 30 and one from the following day; the first report indicated seven violations that needed addressed, while the second report cut that list down to three.

Active Shooter Training Held at Knox Middle School

 
 

The Lowell Post troopers with the Indiana State Police held an active shooter training at Knox Middle School on Monday.

The Safe Schools/Active Shooter Training session was attended by 40 school administrators and troopers instructed school personnel on proper tactics for survival during an active shooter event. The purpose of the Safe Schools/Active Shooter session is to educate school administrators on how to properly respond to an active shooter situation and how law enforcement responds to an active shooter situation. The school staff was directed on what action to take to tend to injured students and to prevent the loss of life.

 
 

Troopers also conducted an active shooter scenario at the Knox Middle School using blank ammunition.

The Indiana State Police has been tasked to coordinate active shooter training with local school corporations throughout the state.

The Pulaski County Commissioners last night approved a quote to perform concrete work at the county annex building. Jeff Johnston, maintenance director for the county, told the commissioners that he would like to start the work in September and in order to do so, the commissioners would need to approve one of the quotes during the meeting.

VSO Accreditation a Topic of Discussion With Marshall County Commissioners

  
 
Veterans Service Officer Pam Schweizer-Betz explained the process of accreditation to the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning.

She told the commissioners that all veteran services officers must be accredited in the state to continue to offer services to veterans. The officers will go through in-depth training to obtain the accreditation from the American Legion or other government entity. Schweizer-Betz said it’s a good idea – only she hasn’t received a packet on the training or when it’s supposed to occur so she can go through the proper steps to be accredited.
