Weapons Reported Stolen from Marshall County Residence

 
 

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the theft of two handguns and a rifle from a home in the 14-thousand block of 20A Road. The owner called the police on Thursday, Aug. 8 to report that someone had gained entry into his house within the past 24 hours. In addition to stealing the guns, the burglar ransacked most of the house and garage and keyed a vehicle. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department at 574-936-3187.

The statewide Silver Alert for a White County man has been cancelled. Willard F. Farmer of Chalmers has been located, according to the Indiana State Police. The White County Sheriff’s Office requested cancellation of the alert.

 

Plymouth Man Arrested after Allegedly Battering a State Trooper

 
 
A Plymouth man was arrested Thursday night after he reportedly headbutted an Indiana State Trooper.

A trooper with the Indiana State Police Bremen Post conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on 6A Road near Michigan Road for several traffic violations. The trooper noticed the odor of alcohol and the passenger, 33-year-old Travis Lee Simpson, told the trooper that he had been drinking.

ISTEP Scores May Arrive at School Corporations this Week

 
 
ISTEP scores could be released this week months after they should have been in the hands of school corporations around the state. ISTEP scores allow teachers and administrators to assess student performance and appropriate remediation on students that may benefit from extra instruction.

Major disruptions were caused during ISTEP testing this spring as the facilitator of the test, CTB McGraw Hill, experienced computer server glitches while students were taking the online test. Superintendent A.J. Gappa said while Knox students weren’t widely affected, some students in the state were.

Bower Street Railroad Crossing in Knox Closed this Week

 
 
The railroad crossing on Bower Street in the City of Knox will be closed this week for maintenance.

The closure will be in place today and will be in effect for the entire week. The crossing is expected to open at the end of the day on Friday, Aug. 16.

A detour will be posted around the closure site. Be sure to include a small detour in your travel plans around the city.

Silver Alert Issued for Missing White County Man

A statewide Silver Alert has been issued for a White County man. Willard F. Farmer, 77, was last seen Sunday, Aug. 11 at 2:05 p.m. He’s from Chalmers, which is about 20 miles northeast of Lafayette. Farmer is described as a white male, 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds with gray hair and hazel eyes. He was wearing an orange plaid short-sleeve shirt, blue pants, possibly a blue jacket and a baseball cap. Farmer may be disoriented and could require medical attention. He’s believed to be driving a small four-door silver 2006 Chevrolet SUV with the Indiana license plate D745AD. If you have any information on Willard F. Museum Director Presents Info to Marshall County Commissioners

  
 
Marshall County Museum Director Linda Rippy made a presentation to the commissioners this week about progress at the museum this summer.

She reported that several students served as volunteers over the summer and hopes to extend the invitation for more students get involved during the school year. Rippy explained that several students come from the Plymouth schools but would welcome students from Argos, Bremen, Culver, Laville and Triton schools to come to the museum and volunteer.

Weekend Crash Claims Lives of LaPorte County Couple

 
 

A Saturday afternoon crash in LaPorte County claimed the lives of a Rolling Prairie couple. Investigators say Hobert West, 88, pulled across U.S. 20 from County Road 450 East into the path of a westbound pickup truck. He and his wife, Leota West, 84, were both killed, according to WSBT-TV. The driver of the pickup truck was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Details of the contract offer for the next Eastern Pulaski School Corporation superintendent will be outlined during a public hearing prior to this evening’s school board meeting. The finalist will not be identified by name, but state law requires a public hearing be held to present terms of the offer. In this case they include a base salary of $100,000 for a 260-day year for the next three years. The school board will review the superintendent’s performance annually, and if he or she is evaluated as either highly effective or effective they may grant a base salary increase.

Formal Charges Filed Against North Judson Man in Shooting Incident

Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff has filed formal charges against a North Judson man who reportedly fired three shots into the floor from a semi-automatic handgun after an argument with his wife Wednesday night.

It was after she walked outside that 48-year-old Hanley Warren Chapman fired three gunshots into his living room floor. Chapman’s brother-in-law was still in the home at the time the shots were fired. He reportedly told police that Chapman fired the gun right next to him and he left the home. The police were then notified of the situation.

Office of Indiana State Fire Marshal Celebrates 100 Year Anniversary

 
 
An office that has provided the state’s residents with safety and consistency in code enforcement and in fire protection is celebrating its 100th anniversary this month.

The Office of the Indiana State Fire Marshal was established by the state legislature in 1913 to the be state’s first agency chartered to help ensure public safety. When it began, the office was simply a focal point for all of Indiana’s volunteer fire departments. Continue reading
