Alice Kay, Wife of First Knox Mayor Glen Kay, Passes away at Age 101

The wife of the first mayor of the City of Knox, Alice Kay, passed away Tuesday at the age of 101. She had lived for many years at the Catherine Kasper Home in Donaldson. She would have been 102 on May 8th.

“She was just a wisp of a lady, but her personality was that of a person twice her size,” stated Ted Hayes. “Alice Kay was devoted to her husband Glen, daughter Judy, grandson Dirk, son-in-law Herb, St. Aquinas Catholic Church and her many friends. She was a partner with her husband in Glen Kay Clothing and Shoes which was located in the building that now houses Fingerhut Bakery in Knox.”

Frozen Entrees Recalled Due to Mislabeling

A South Carolina firm has issued a recall for frozen entrees due to a mislabeling and because it contains an undeclared allergen.

Nestle Prepared Foods Company is recalling roughly 16,890 pounds of Stouffer’s lasagna frozen entrees that may contain stuffed peppers with Worcestershire Sauce made with anchovies, a known allergen that is not declared on the lasagna labels. Subject to recall are the 19 1/8-oz. Cartons of “Stouffer’s Lasagna Italiano,” with a best before date of “Jan. 2014,” and shipping cases of “Stouffers DS STFD Peppers,” each containing 12 cartons that may be labeled with “Stouffer’s Lasagna Italiano.”

Knox Man Arrested Following Burglary

Knox City Police officers were called to a residence in Knox early Saturday morning in response to a burglary in progress. While en route to the address on south Main Street, officers learned that a male had fled from the residence on foot after allegedly stealing a purse and medication belonging to the homeowner.

Officers learned of a possible suspect, and on Saturday morning, a search warrant was executed at the Woods Apartments on East Danker Street in Knox, where they found the items that had been stolen from the Main Street residence. Eric Draper, 34, of Knox was taken into custody.

City of Knox to Receive Funds from State Accounting Error

A state error that was announced earlier in the month could provide funds coming back to the City of Knox. Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston said last week that a revelation in December found that the state didn’t account for some $320 million in corporate taxes. That triggered an internal audit that resulted in a discovery of a needed distribution to cities, towns and counties of $206 million.

Two Winamac Residents Arrested on Drug Charges

Two Winamac residents were arrested on drug charges on Sunday after police served an arrest warrant on a subject.

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department approached the house and asked Gina Napier who all was in the house. She said that she and her children were in the house. When police asked the whereabouts of Steven Neeley, she reportedly said she didn’t know where he was. Police saw him sitting on a bed in the home and ordered him out of the house as he had an active arrest warrant. He was taken into custody.

Public Meeting Held Regarding Five-Member North Judson Town Board

The public meeting regarding the transition of the North Judson Town Board from a three-member board to a five-member board was held Thursday, providing information regarding the transition to all those in attendance. Council President Wendy Hoppe and Councilman Tim Cummins were present, along with Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry, Starke County Clerk Evelyn Skronski, IACT Field Services Manager Tim Bredeweg, and a number of community members were present as well.

North Judson Man Arrested after Prescription Drugs are Found in His Possession

A North Judson man was arrested on April 12th after police found he was consealing prescription medication.

Kevin Glisic was pulled over in the North Judson area for an infraction violation and during the traffic stop, the officer did not find any contraband in his vehicle. After Glisic was released from the traffic stop, police reportedly received information that he was consealing medication in his pants. Pulaski County police learned that he was going to a residence in the Medaryville area and on the way there, officers found the Glisic’s vehicle at a gas station. Glisic allegedly saw law enforcement in the area and reportedly started acting suspiciously.  The officer asked Glisic if he could speak with him outside and he agreed saying that he had nothing in his car.

Yellow Bridge Construction to Begin April 30th

The Indiana Department of Transportation has awarded a bid to a Gary company on the bridge reconstruction project over the Yellow River on U.S. 35 in Knox.

Construction should begin on the U.S. 35 bridge by the end of April. Work on the bridge will be restricted to one lane at a time, so the other lane would remain open for one-way traffic, with a traffic signal controlling the flow of traffic. The expected length of the lane restrictions on the bridge is 150 days.

Ron Gifford from the Starke County Economic Development Foundation appeared before the Knox City Council last week seeking a Statement of Benefits document for the Toll Brothers plant in Knox. Toll Brothers is the preeminent luxury home-builder in America.

The Statement of Benefits document that Toll Brothers is seeking is to certify that they are in substantial compliance with the original tax abatement that was granted.

Large Heroin Bust takes Bite out of Drug Market

On the evening of April 10, 2012, officers with the Indiana State Police and the South Bend Police Department Special Operation Section worked in concert to remove more than 10 pounds of powder heroin from the streets. The multi-jurisdictional investigation that led officers to the estimated $400,000 in heroin stemmed from an investigation that started in Indianapolis during the summer of 2011.

Starke County Jail Committee Holds Meeting

The Starke County Jail Committee recently met with representatives from the DLZ Architectural Firm, Skillman Corporation, Umbaugh and Associates, and Ice Miller Legal Councilors.

The next phase of the committee’s work is the data collection by Paul Downing of DLZ. Downing said after he collects the data, including jail bed needs, he will pass the information along to the architectural team.

Starke County Commissioners, Council to Discuss 9-1-1 Services

One of the agenda items for the combined Starke County Council and Commissioners meeting tonight will be a method for paying for 9-1-1 dispatch services. The money is collected by the state, and will be distributed to the individual counties.

According to Auditor Kay Chaffins, last week the funding to maintain 9-1-1 services has been going down each year. In 2010, the county received $408,354. In 2011, the amount was $362,849.

Starke County Legacy of Women to Offer Grants

The Starke County Legacy of Women organization is offering grants to women in the community to attend a leadership event or conference.

“This is our second year that the Legacy of Women is providing grants for women in our county to hopefully have them go either for conferences or plan a retreat,” stated member Sheri Bartoli. “We’re asking them then to bring the ideas back to the community.”

IDHS District 2 to Participate in Disaster Exercise

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security District Two Response Task Force will participate in coordinated effort on Wednesday, April 25th at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in Butlerville, Indiana.

The State Level Exercise 2012 Tornado Alley will bring together the efforts of firefighters, emergency medical services personnel, emergency managers, law enforcement personnel and other local emergency response professionals from Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko, Marshall, Starke and St. Joseph Counties. Pulaski County officials will be deploying the Tactical Rescue Team and Service and Support Element.

Koontz Lake Association, DNR to Treat Lake for Watermilfoil, Pondweed on Tuesday

The eradication of Eurasian watermilfoil and curlyleaf pondweed in the Koontz Lake will begin on Tuesday, April 17th.

The Koontz Lake Association and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources River Enhancement Program will be conducting a whole lake treatment for control with EPA approved Sonar Herbicide. Other treatments will be completed within 90-120 days following tomorrow’s treatment.
