Three Arrested for Theft from Walmart in Plymouth

Three Starke County residents were arrested on theft charges after two separate incidents.

On Monday, Plymouth Police officers were notified that Jacob D. Fier and Michael J. Hardel, of Knox, were allegedly shoplifting while in Walmart. They were going to flee the scene, but the pair went back into the store. They have preliminary charges of Theft and were incarcerated in the Marshall County Jail.

Winamac Town Park Crews Cleaning up after Vandalism Incident

The Winamac Town Board heard from Park Superintendent Rick Dilts who reported that the clean-up at the Town Park is almost complete. A suspected juvenile printed graffiti on the park property and the graffiti included harsh words against a certain student. A vandalism report was made with the Winamac Police Department and if anyone knows anything about this incident, call the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department at 946-6655.

Eastern Pulaski School Board Discusses Student Conduct

Eastern Pulaski School Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman gave a special report to the School Board Monday night concerning student conduct and student discipline.

“I spent some time going over what we’re doing K-12 in relation to having proper student behavior, discipline, character and those types of things,” stated Dr. Klitzman. “We talked about what teachers are doing in the classroom and some of our formal instructional packages that we have to offer our students that we can show that are being done. We talked about supervision and some of the next steps that we’re going to be taking in terms of education and in terms of a community-wide effort to help get a handle on some of the more blatant types of misbehavior that are happening.”

West Central Wind Turbine in Testing Phase

West Central School Superintendent Charles Mellon gave the school board members an update on the progress of the wind turbine.

“It is in production,” Mr. Mellon reported. “They’re just fine-tuning some issues that we have as far as how many watts can actually go out to the grid at one time so they’re making some final adjustments on that. We’re still in the middle of the 120-hour commissioning process. We’re in that phase right now and hopefully we’ll be in full compliance here very soon.”

Chocolate Presentation Given at Knox Library

Brandy Love, of the South Bend Chocolate Company, visited the Henry F. Schricker Library in Knox yesterday to talk about chocolate.

South Bend Chocolate was established in 1991 with Notre Dame products. Since that time, they have added to that and now have over 350 products sold at 20 locally owned or franchise stores.

Brandy showed those gathered the fruit that helps produce chocolate.

This is a memorable day in the history of Starke County. On this date in 1965, three people were killed and 200 buildings were damaged during the Palm Sunday tornadoes. The hardest hit area was Koontz Lake where then-Sheriff Gordon Armstrong reported 156 houses severely damaged. 33 of the homes were completely destroyed. Killed at Koontz Lake was 50-year-old Everett James. The other two victims were rural Walkerton residents.

Almost $17,000 Worth of Cocaine Seized in Traffic Stop

More than thirteen ounces of cocaine were confiscated following a traffic stop and search in LaPorte County.

According to Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer, a traffic stop was conducted on April 3rd for 42-year-old Leobardo Campos of LaPorte. He was stopped for a traffic violation on State Road 39 near LaPorte, and when Deputy Andrew Morse walked his K9 partner, Mirza, around the vehicle, it alerted him to the presence of narcotics. The vehicle was impounded and a search warrant was obtained for the car.

Eagle Creek Bridge Recommended for Closure

One of the most famous bridges in Starke County might be abandoned. The bridge over Eagle Creek on 600 East at County Road 25 North was recommended to be closed by engineering firm, Beam, Longest and Neff. If abandoned, the bridge would be turned over to the farmers in the area who use it, and they would be in charge of maintenance to be able to get their farm equipment over the structure. It would not be open to traffic.

North Judson Town Board Plans Special Meeting

The North Judson Town Board will be taking public comments concerning expanding the current board from three to five members this Thursday, April 12th.

A representative from the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns will be at the meeting to explain the process of moving forward and to answer any questions on the possible move. All of the Board members will also be present to discuss the reasons why they are looking to increase the number of members on the board.

Zachary Dix Arrested after Alleged Fight in Francesville

A Francesville man was arrested after striking a 15-year-old in the face, causing a half-inch laceration to the upper lip of the juvenile which required six stitches to close. 19-year-old Zachary D. Dix was arrested and faces charges of Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury as a Class C felony.

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the 300 block of North Bill Street in Francesville in response to a physical altercation. When they arrived on the scene, deputies were told that Zachary Dix, had allegedly struck the victim in the face while the two were in the front yard of the residence. The juvenile reportedly said that attack knocked him unconscious and left him in a great deal of pain.

Winamac Man Arrested After Striking Pole

A Winamac man was arrested after his Jeep struck a telephone pole and disrupting power in the area of 125 E. near 250 N. in Pulaski County. According to the incident report, an officer from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to the area and found a silver Jeep SUV in a field with heavy front-end damage, and a telephone pole leaning over the roadway.

Walk to School Day this Thursday in Winamac

Winamac students, Safe Routes to School Task Force leaders, Kiwanis Club members and local law enforcement will be participating in “Walk to School Day” in Winamac this Thursday, April 12th.

The walk will begin at 7:30 a.m. ET at the corner of Main and Logan Streets in Winamac and all participants will walk down Main Street to the north side of the County Courthouse, to Monticello Street to Riverside Drive and it will end at the Elementary and Middle Schools. You are also invited to join in the walk.

Jerry Nenycz to Perform in Benefit for Youngster

Jerry Nenycz, newly named Indiana Non-Commissioned Soldier of the Year has two loves: the military and music.

Nenycz is quite accomplished on the guitar and said like all youngsters, he was always into music.

“Music is probably my first love. It was there when I was a kid,” Nenycz said.

He writes the music he performs and is going into the recording studio.

“I’m going into a recording studio really soon. Right now I just play acoustic guitar and sing. I hope to have fun with it for the rest of my life.”

Income Tax Filing Deadline is April 17th

You might have thought that your federal income tax returns were due next Monday. Usually when April 15th falls on a weekend, the income tax filing deadline is pushed to the following Monday. When the deadline falls on a federal holiday, it’s pushed to the next business day. This time around, April 15 falls on a Sunday and yet your taxes are not due until April 17th. Why?

April 16th is Emancipation Day which is a holiday in Washington, D.C. Emancipation Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act by President Lincoln in 1862, which freed the slaves in the District of Columbia.
