Potential Funding Available for Repairing Flood Damaged Roads in Starke County

Several roads around Starke County have spent many days underwater due to the recent floods. This extended exposure to saturation will most likely result in many sections of roadway needing previously unplanned repairs.

On Sunday, Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler took county and state officials on a tour of the area to highlight some of the spots that were hit the hardest by flood waters.

He explained that once the waters recede enough, crews will be conducting thorough assessments around the county to see where work will need to be done. Continue reading →

Winamac Town Council Establishes Community Crossings Grant Fund

Winamac Town Council members established an account for Community Crossings Grant funds when they met earlier this week.

Town Attorney Justin Schramm mentioned that the account would hold the $90,000 awarded through the grant as well as the $30,000 of match money. Providing match money was a stipulation of receiving the grant and the amount would be transferred from the transportation fund. Continue reading →

North Judson Town Superintendent Announces Community Crossings Grant Funds

The Town Superintendent of North Judson, Marshall Horstmann, told council members the amount of money that was received through the INDOT Community Crossings Grant when they met last week.

Horstmann said the Town of North Judson was awarded $125,094.75 to go toward paving for next year. He alerted the council members that a certain rule surrounding the grant funding has changed.

“Now the way they do it is you have to pay for the paving and then you have to turn in a receipt to INDOT. Then they’ll reimburse you.” Horstmann went on, explaining the reason for the switch, “They’ve had issues in the past where towns have gotten the money but then they didn’t do the paving.”

Horstmann told council members he is meeting with INDOT representatives on October 16th to go into more detail about project specifics.

Knox Street Department to Complete Four Projects with Community Crossings Grant Funds

The City of Knox was recently awarded $455,559.61 in Community Crossings grant funds. Street Superintendent Jeff Borg told the Knox Board of Public Works members on Wednesday morning that the city’s match is $151,853.17 which will complete four priority projects.

INDOT funds 75 percent of the projects to help with the purchase of materials for the projects. It is the goal of INDOT to help build and improve Indiana’s infrastructure.
