Food Pantry Emerges Victorious in WKVI Sports Bet
Starke County residents who need a hand up are the big winners in the good-natured bet between WKVI’s Nathan Welter and Mary Perren over the outcome of the recent Knox v. North Judson-San Pierre football game. Since Nathan is a graduate and Knox and they lost, part of his payoff was hosting an hour-long food drive at Heartland Markets in North Judson. Bass Lake Fire Department Hosts Charity Polar Bear Swim

Cold Water Challenge Issued to Help Local Organization
The cold water challenge in Starke County is going down to a deeper level.
Bass Lake Fire Chief Les Jensen called out several folks to be part of a cold water challenge on Nov. 1 where a dip into the cold waters of Bass Lake will help benefit the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry.
Starke County EMS Accepting Donations for Food Pantry
The Starke County EMS family is currently accepting canned goods and non-perishable items at each of the county’s EMS stations. The emergency responders will be collecting items through Christmas. The donations will be given to the county food pantry.
EMS Director, Paul Mathewson, said that while they are collecting food at each of the stations in Grovertown, Knox, and North Judson, they are accepting donations of coats for those in need this winter season. They hope to get coats for children and adults in time for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. New or gently used coats will be accepted.
SCILL Center Students to Conduct Winter Car Checks
The SCILL Center is offering free winter car checks in exchange for a donation to the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry.
On Monday, November 21st, from 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. CT, the SCILL Center students will conduct a pre-winter inspection of your car or truck. Your car’s anti-freeze will be checked, along with the battery, belts, windshield wipers, lights, and tires. For every car that comes in, First Farmers Bank and Trust will make a cash donation to the food pantry. Your donation of a food item will ensure a check of your car by the students. You will also receive discount coupons from area auto supply stores for any replacement parts needed.
Donations Needed at Starke County Food Pantry
The Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry shelves are again bare. Cecilia Torres told Ted Hayes yesterday that 279 families were helped with meat and groceries in August. That number reached an all-time high.
“More and more people are turning to the Food Pantry and donations are down,” said Torres. “We get our food from churches, organizations and individuals who open up their pocketbooks and their hearts to us. We’ve gotten a few dollar donations.”
Starke County Food Pantry Receives Generous Donation
The Starke County Food Pantry received a $3,500 check from the Starke County General Unrestricted Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation for the purpose of purchasing meat and food for the food pantry.
Cecilia Torres, Services Coordinator, says that several more donations have come into the food pantry, but more is always welcome. You may drop off your donation at the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Starke County Youth Club to Raise Money for Food Pantry
The Starke County Youth Club is coming to the aide of the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry. Last week we announced that the food pantry was in dire need of food, and the Youth Club is stepping up.
Today from 12:10 until 1:10 p.m., twelve Knox Middle School students will be at Five Star to bag groceries. Donations will be spent at the store and donated to the food pantry.
