Culver Community High School’s building trades class is showing off its latest project this weekend. Students from Culver, Knox, and North Judson worked on the 1,600-square-foot, four-bedroom, three-bathroom home at 215 Lakeview Street over the past nine months, according to the school corporation’s website.

Culver Community High School students are advancing their language skills, while having the chance to earn college credit. The school board got an update Monday on one of the school’s new course offerings, according to Superintendent Karen Shuman. “We did have our AP Spanish students come and talk to our board because that’s a new program that we’re offering this year,” she says, “and so they went over the rigor and the content of that course.”
Culver School Board Hears from Exchange Students, FFA Chapter
A small-town environment, school spirit, and making new friends were just a few of the things that Culver Community High School’s foreign exchange students said they liked about their experience this year. Last week, the Culver School Board heard from three exchange students, from Brazil, Norway, and South Korea.
Culver Students Help Build Houses for Families in Mexico
A group of Culver students recently went to Mexico to help improve the living conditions of local families. The Culver School Board heard a presentation Monday from Culver Community High School students Cody Rieckhoff and RT Roberts. They, along with Marcella Cooper, joined a group of about 40 students from Culver Academies on a spring break mission trip.

Starke County Community Foundation Announces Lilly Endowment Scholarship Finalists
Nearly 30 students applied for the 2018 Starke County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship and recently, the Starke County Community Foundation announced the five students who were chosen as finalists.
Seniors from Knox High Community School, Culver Community High School and North Judson-San Pierre High School are in the running to receive the scholarship.
The student chosen from Culver was Cody Rieckhoff who plans to study criminal justice. The North Judson-San Pierre finalist is Ashley Rearden who wants to go into business management. Three finalists are from Knox Community High School and they are Elizabeth McEntee, who plans to study neuro-biology, Cassandra Waletzko, who is considering concentrations in biology and forensic science and Daniel Darda who plans to study animation. “U.S. News and World Report” Releases 2017 High School Rankings
Several high schools in the Kankakee Valley are ranked among the best in Indiana by “U.S. News and World Report.” The publication reviewed more than 28,000 schools nationwide for its 2017 rankings, and 136 schools in Indiana made their “Best High Schools” rankings. The publication ranks schools based on their performance on state-required tests and how well they prepare students for college. Continue reading
Culver BPA Students Raising Funds for National Event
Students participating in Culver Community High School’s Business Professionals of America (BPA) organization are headed to a national event in May.
The recent state BPA conference in Indianapolis featured 2,000 students and five Culver students qualified for the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Culver School Board to Consider Proceeding with Teacher Cuts
Teacher cuts will be considered during tonight’s Culver School Board meeting. Last month, the board formally declared the need to cut up to four certificated teaching positions. The resolution cited a $250,000 reduction in General Fund support from the state for this year and the need for the corporation to cut $440,000 from its budget. Continue reading
Appraisals Taking Place for Monterey School Building
The former Monterey School Building is in the process of being appraised, ahead of a planned sale of the property. Culver Schools Interim Superintendent Chuck Kitchell told the school board Monday that one appraisal was completed a couple of weeks ago and another was scheduled for Tuesday of this week. Maxinkuckee Players Set to Present ‘Hello, Dolly!’
The community theater in Culver that has been putting on productions for three and a half decades has spent months preparing for their latest show, ‘Hello, Dolly!’. Performers come from all over the northern Indiana area to audition to be a part of the Maxinkuckee Players. Vocational Program’s Fate Hinges on Balanced Calendar Adoption
At least one of the popular trade programs offered through the North Central Vocational Educational Cooperative could be in jeopardy as participating corporations weigh the pros and cons of a balanced school calendar. Kyle Elliott is instructor for the building trades program based at Culver Community High School. He says students from Knox and North Judson-San Pierre are also enrolled in the program.
