Culver Community Schools Corporation Celebrates 50th Anniversary, While Preparing for Referendum

The Culver Community Schools Corporation is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, but school officials are also looking to the future, as next month’s referendum approaches. Superintendent Karen Shuman passed out special 50th anniversary pins to school board members Monday. “It is a significant end, when we talk about the referendum, that we wish to be here in 50 years,” she said, “and as you’ve seen, the signs have gone up.”

Culver School Board to Consider Metal Detector Policy, 2019 Budget Tonight

The Culver School Board is expected to finalize a policy on the use of metal detectors tonight. The school corporation received three handheld metal detectors, as part of the state’s program to provide them free of charge to Indiana’s schools. The proposed policy stipulates that the devices may only be used by school administrators in cases where there is reasonable suspicion, according to Superintendent Karen Shuman.

New Entrance Nearly Ready at Culver Community Middle/High School

Culver Community Middle/High School’s new main entrance is just about done. “All glass is in,” Superintendent Karen Shuman told the school board Monday. “All rooms are created. All plumbing is into the nurse’s station. All painting is completed. All furniture has been delivered. And all carpet has been replaced that needed replaced. So at this point, we are just waiting for trim to be finalized and cleaning of the whole zone to make it shine.”

Culver School Board Approves OCRA Sub Agreement for Cavalier Sports Park

The Culver School Board approved an agreement related to the development of the Cavalier Sports Park Monday. Superintendent Karen Shuman says the project is part of Culver’s Stellar Community Designation. “They’re putting three soccer fields, a concession stand with restrooms, and a small toddler park, and then expanding the parking,” she told board members.

Culver Schools to Do Away with Alternative Lunch for Students with Negative Account Balances

 

Students at Culver Community Schools who have fallen behind in their lunch payments will now continue to get regular hot lunches. Previously, students who had accumulated a negative balance in their lunch accounts beyond a certain amount had been given an alternative box lunch. The issue, according to Superintendent Karen Shuman, is that students were still being charged, even though they weren’t getting a regular lunch.

Wage and Salary Schedule Put in Place for Culver School Employees

The Culver School Board has adopted a wage and salary schedule for school employees. Superintendent Karen Shuman says it lists all of the positions that exist in the corporation, along with their starting salaries. It also outlines the increments of raises, based on employees’ performance evaluations. Shuman says the wage and salary schedule doesn’t involve any major changes to employees’ existing pay levels.
