Questions Raised Concerning Culver Golf Cart Ordinance

What’s the difference between a golf cart and a Utility Terrain Vehicle? There isn’t much of one, but enough of a difference for UTVs to be prohibited on town roads, says Grant Munroe, owner of Culver Lodging Realty and CGM Photography. Munroe appeared before the town council and requested a revision to the Golf Cart Ordinance to allow for the use of UTVs on Culver roads.

Nunsense-The Mega Musical Returns to the Stage Tonight

The cast of Nunsense-The Mega Musical is back on the stage tonight at Argos High School. Director Becky Liechty said that she has sat through all of the rehearsals and she still has a good time watching and laughing as the actors bring the characters to life in this musical comedy.

Liechty gives us a quick review of the musical.

“Sister Julia, Child of God, is the convent cook and she has made some vichyssoise soup which turns out to be poisonous. 52 sisters die. Believe it or not, this is a comedy…it really is funny. They bury 48 of the 52 sisters and then Reverend Mother buys a Plasma TV for the convent thinking there’s enough money to bury the last four and there isn’t. Now they’re putting on this fundraiser which makes it a show within a show so they can raise the money to bury the rest of the dead sisters. It’s a really funny show.”

A Little Piece of the Beatles History at Papa’s Restaurant in Culver

Brian McCormick

If you’re a restaurant affectionado, you’ve undoubtedly eaten at Papa’s in Culver. It’s the restaurant on the curve that has the vinyl record jackets on the wall.

Chances are many of those album jackets could have been designed by the original owner of Papa’s, Jim McCormick. Jim McCormick was an A and R man for years at V-J Records in Chicago. Look above the bar and you’ll see a Beatles jacket. Jim McCormick recommended that V-J sign the British group in the early 1960’s. An initial contract was sold for $350 to Capital and the rest, as they say, is history. His son, Brian, runs the restaurant today, and remembers how close his dad came to signing the Beatles. A tough and controversial decision was made last night by the Culver Community School Board, as they ultimately voted 5-2 to discontinue operation of Monterey Elementary School. The closure of the school was due to a need to meet budget cuts in the amount of $855,928 over two years from the state. While this decision may not have been the most popular one, the Board felt it was the best decision for the school, as well as the teachers, the students, and even the parents.

“The vote ended up being five members voted for the motion, two members voted against the motion, and the motion was to discontinue operation of Monterey Elementary school effective at the end of this current school year,” said Superintendent Brad Schuldt, “and that the students beginning next year would be a part of the Culver Elementary School body.”

In all, there were 100 volunteers working on the event, that was co-chaired by Kyle Blankenship who said, “We weren’t about to cancel the two day event because of a little rain.”

The Academies’ fund raising effort was bolstered April 13th by a $2,500 check from the Kelly Cares Foundation, and its founders Brian and Paqui Kelly. Paqui Kelly is a two time cancer survivor and the wife of the University of Notre Dame football coach.
