Lilly Endowment Inc. announced the approval of a $50 million grant to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for a variety of enhancements at Indiana State Parks. DNR will use the grant to make several improvements within Prophetstown State Park and to fund upgrades across the state parks system that will improve the experience for Hoosiers who visit these treasured places.

According to Starke County Surveyor Bill Crase, four breached levees in the Starke County and La Porte County areas have recently been fixed, while work on one site is being postponed due to the current levels of the Kankakee River.
Surveyor Crase explained that while working on the final section of a levee, workers realized that the river wasn’t dropping. He said if they sealed it up, the pressure would have caused the water to burst out elsewhere so they weren’t able to fix it just yet. While they have slowed the breach down a bit, Crase said crews continue to monitor the spot and are waiting for the river to drop before patching it up any further. Continue reading
More Than 1600 Hoosier Students Benefit from Field Trip Grant Program
Thanks to the Discovering the Outdoors Field Trip Grant Program, students at 22 Indiana schools will learn about nature by visiting Indiana state parks and reservoirs this school year. The grants are open to public, private, religious and home-school educators and are administered through the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation, the supporting non-profit of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Record Amount of Rainfall Leads to Boating Restrictions
The Department of Natural Resources had to restrict motorboat traffic from certain public freshwater lakes in Northern Indian due to the abundance of summer storms. DNR Makes Some Changes to Campground Fees
Due to the increase in campground operating costs, the Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife must raise their campground fees. The increase in fees will allow operations and maintenance to continue at Glendale, J.E. Roush Lake, and Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Areas. DNR Approves Grants to Eradicate Invasive Aquatic Vegetation
The Department of Natural Resources has issued grant money to local counties to fight invasive aquatic vegetation. Lake and River Enhancement program grants from the DNR Division of Fish and Wildlife allow for the completion of projects that would be difficult for local organizations to fund on their own.
DNR Considers Rule Change to Allow River Otter Trapping
River otters are thriving a little too well in Indiana nearly 20 years after their successful reintroduction into the state. Last year biologists with the division of fish and wildlife received 86 complaints of river otters eating fish from private ponds and commercial hatcheries or destroying private property. That’s up from 69 complaints in 2012. Also the number of control permits issued or renewed nearly doubled from 11 in 2012 to 21 in 2013. Continue reading
Hunting Accident Spurs Hunting Safety Reminders
A hunting accident under investigation in Newton County this week has prompted Indiana conservation officers to remind hunters to stay safe while hunting, particularly when perched in an elevated tree stand. A hunter fell to the ground from a tree stand approximately 20 feet from the ground, and the investigation revealed that 18-year-old Tyler Claus had fallen asleep prior to falling from the stand.
