The Starke County Commissioners gathered public comment Monday night on the proposed construction of a Dollar General store at the corner of 200 South and U.S. 35 south of Knox.
Commission President Donnie Binkley noted that he wanted to gather public opinion on the project as the intersection poses a safety concern. Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler said INDOT expedited a traffic study at that intersection and found that it does not warrant the installation of a stop light. About 8,000 northbound and southbound vehicles pass that intersection on U.S. 35 each day. Less than 30 cars turn east on 200 South which is the location of the driveway.
Public Input Sought on Proposed Dollar General Store Project in Knox
Update: Tonight’s Starke County Commissioners meeting has been rescheduled due to cold weather. Auditor Kay Chaffins says it will now be held Monday, January 8 at 6:00 p.m.
The Starke County Commissioners will hold public discussion on the proposed move of the Dollar General Store to the eastern corner of 200 South and U.S. 35 just south of Knox.
During their December 18th meeting, the commissioners discussed the amended plans for the driveway into the store off of 200 South which presents potential safety concerns, according to Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler. He told the board that it’s a heavily traveled area and he’d like to see a stop light or some safety enhancement at that intersection. The commissioners agreed to gather public comment on the matter during tonight’s regular session meeting.
Public Input Sought in Plans for Dollar General Driveway
The Starke County Commissioners are asking for public input concerning the development of a Dollar General Store, more specifically the driveway into the property.
Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler told the commissioners Monday night that he only recently learned that the City of Knox approved plans for the proposed store at 4015 E. 200 S. in Knox at the intersection of U.S. 35. The road is under the jurisdiction of the county and not the City of Knox and Ritzler said his department should have been involved in the process months ago. He mentioned that the original plans called for two driveways on 200 S. and the westernmost driveway was too close to U.S. 35. Ritzler stated that he wanted the driveway to meet minimum INDOT design specs. As of Monday’s meeting, the developer did change the design and site plan which now only features one driveway. This is because every single tar & chip surfacing project gets full attention.

Medaryville Dollar General Store Clears Council Hurdle
The Medaryville Town Council recently voted to vacate an alley to allow construction of a 9,100 square foot Dollar General store in the downtown area. That action came on the heels of the Pulaski County Advisory Plan Commission’s approval of a rezoning request for land at 103 W. West St. in downtown Medaryville. The property was previously zoned for residential development but was recommended for rezoning to commercial in order to allow the development. Sullivan, Ind.-based Foster Builders, Inc. sought the rezoning request. A call to their office Friday afternoon to discuss their plans and a possible construction timeline was not immediately returned.

Town Council President Gene Payne says the proposal will now go to the county commissioners for final approval.
“It means everything to Medaryville and the surrounding community to get a business like that, or any kind of business. Everyone in the area is in support of it. We really need it,” Payne said.

Public Hearing Tonight Regarding Proposed Dollar General in Medaryville
The Advisory Plan Commission will hold a public hearing tonight at the Pulaski County Courthouse to discuss the request from the company Foster Builders to rezone the property at 103 W. West St. in Medaryville from residential to commercial in order to construct a Dollar General.
According to the notice of public hearing, the proposed development involves construction of a 9,100 square foot Dollar General building as a single-story mercantile structure. Because it would be a commercial business, and the proposed location is in a residential area, the company must first receive the approval by the Advisory Plan Commission to rezone the area before they can proceed.
Public Hearing Scheduled for Rezoning to Allow Dollar General in Medaryville
A public hearing is scheduled to be held this month regarding a rezoning application in Medaryville to allow a Dollar General to be built in what is currently a residential area. The hearing will take place before the Advisory Plan Commission at the Pulaski County Courthouse, located at 112 E. Main St. in Winamac.
Foster Builders, Inc. have applied for the rezoning ordinance to allow 103 W. West St. in Medaryville to be made a commercial property to allow a 9,100 square foot Dollar General building, single-story, to be built. The application and all submitted documentation are available for review Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Winamac Building located at 125 S. Riverside Drive, Suite 150, in Winamac.
Knox Man Arrested for Alleged Sandal Theft
A Knox man was arrested after allegedly stealing sandals from Dollar General in Knox.
A Knox City Police officer was dispatched to Dollar General where an employee reported that a man, later identified as Lolus Johnson, had stolen a pair of shoes. He had left his old shoes in the store.
When police were enroute to the store, Johnson was spotted in the alley between Heaton Street and Pearl Street. The officer approached Johnson and Johnson reportedly stepped out of his sandals he was wearing and started walking barefoot. The officer asked about the shoes and Johnson allegedly admitted to police that he did take the shoes because he didn’t have any money.
Lolus Johnson, 51, was detained and while police conducted a routine pat-down they allegedly found a marijuana cigarette and controlled substances. He was arrested on preliminary charges of Theft, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Knox Man Arrested after Alleged Shoplifting Incident
Knox City Police arrested a Knox man last week after he reportedly stole items from Dollar General.
An employee from the store called police and said that a man and woman were in the store and it appeared that they were stealing items. She reportedly saw the pair place items underneath their clothes. The officer saw the man, identified as William King, pushing a stroller with shopping bags in it, and asked to talk with him. He asked King what he bought from the store. The woman, Linda King, exited the store with a child and reportedly told police that they didn’t steal anything from the store. After being asked several times, William King reportedly removed packaged headphones from his right pocket. When the officer patted him down, he reportedly found several more items in his pants.
