FEMA representatives will be visiting the Starke County Highway Department for a site visit next week to assess paperwork and damage repair from flooding that occurred in February.
There are just a few days left to register for federal disaster assistance, following February’s floods. The deadline is Thursday, July 5. You can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362.

FEMA recently issued a public notice in regards to the major flooding that occurred earlier this year and the subsequent public and individual funding assistance being offered to several counties including Starke, Pulaski, Marshall and La Porte.
The notice, provided by Starke County EMA Director J. Nier, reportedly concerns activities that may affect historic properties, ones that are located in or affecting wetland areas or the 100-year floodplain and critical actions within the 500-year flood plain. FEMA officials report that such incidents may adversely affect the historical property, floodplain, or wetland or could result in continuing vulnerability to flood damage. Continue reading
A FEMA Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will open in LaPorte today to assist flood-affected residents in La Porte, Porter and Starke counties.
The DRC is located in the Sheriff’s Building on Concession Boulevard at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds, located at 2581 West State Road 2 in LaPorte. It will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. (CT), Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Continue reading
FEMA officials are urging flood survivors to read their letters carefully regarding housing assistance and the reason why assistance may be denied.
According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Individual Assistance from FEMA is now available to 13 more counties, including Starke and Pulaski.
Now that Starke and Pulaski counties are eligible for Individual Assistance, homeowners and renters whose primary residence was damaged by the flooding that occurred between February 14th and March 4th can apply for federal disaster assistance.
The funds are intended to cover uninsured losses for flood damages. Individuals are encouraged to register with FEMA before the deadline of Thursday, July 5th. Continue reading

Starke County Emergency Management Agency Director J. Nier and EMS Director Travis Clary attended a briefing with FEMA representatives on Thursday in order to learn more about the public financial assistance that is available to the county to help with flood relief.
EMA Director Nier explained that in order to be eligible for public assistance, the county had to reach about $85,000 spent dealing with flood recovery. Nier said that number was not only reached, but it was surpassed, with close to $2 million spent during the immediate response. Continue reading
Pulaski County is looking to get some federal help to repair flood damage. Representatives from FEMA and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security met with various local officials last week, according to Pulaski County EMA Director Sheri Gaillard. “We really don’t have any information. They couldn’t tell us if we met the threshold or not,” she told the county commissioners Monday. “They just went over our dollar amounts and praised us for our documentation. Everything was good there. The next step is to turn it over to the governor to see if the State of Indiana meets the threshold. If we’ve met the threshold, they will then give all that information to FEMA.”
Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler met with FEMA representatives last week to discuss flood damage to the county’s roads, bridges and culverts.
Ritzler told the Starke County Commissioners Monday night that there are three categories that the county qualifies for when it comes to reimbursement funding.

The Culver Town Council members acknowledged Culver’s inclusion in Marshall County’s designation in a disaster declaration for flooding. Any residents experiencing flood damage are encouraged to call 2-1-1 or the Marshall County Emergency Management Agency at 574-936-3740. All damage is to be reported for a better chance of receiving federal assistance for repairs and recovery.
On Sunday afternoon, Starke County officials met with State Representative Jim Pressel (District 20) and State Senator Mike Bohacek (District 8) to discuss the recent devastation caused by flooding and what steps to take next.
