Fireworks to Return to Wythogan Park

 
 

Knox Mayor Dennis Estok is bringing the city’s July 4th fireworks display back to Wythogan Park. They’ve taken place at the Starke County Airport northwest of Knox for the past several years. Estok wants to bring them back downtown to ensure youngsters are able to attend. His plans call for a parade to kick off the celebration. Continue reading

IDHS Offers Fireworks Safety Tips

  
 

The Indiana Department of Homeland has developed a few tips to ensure safety during Independence Day celebrations.

IDHS says fireworks can be purchased by persons 18 years of age or older. To ensure safety, however, it’s considered best to buy the items at licensed dealer locations. State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson says despite safety precautions, structure fires can certainly be started by their misuse.

Winamac Fireworks Moved From Town Park to School

 
 

Residents of Winamac will be traveling to a new location to view this year’s fireworks show.

The July 4th celebration is organized through matched donations and typically hosted in the Winamac Town Park. Due to flooding that is affecting the grounds, the fireworks show will now be held at the school in Winamac on the practice fields.

PTSD Triggers Present During Independence Day Celebrations

 Fireworks detonated during holiday celebrations can have an effect on individuals afflicted with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, according to one Clinically Licensed Social Worker.

Richard Voorhees is affiliated with Pulaski Memorial Hospital. He says former and active military members who have been in combat situations are particularly susceptible to the noise on Independence Day.

Fireworks Season Gets Under Way

 Independence Day is Saturday, but many Hoosiers are getting an early start on their celebrations. Consumer fireworks can legally be discharged June 29 – July 3 from 9 a.m. until two hours after sunset. That cutoff time is extended to midnight on the 4th. From July 5 – 9 they can again be set off until two hours after sunset. Local ordinances may be more restrictive, so check before lighting the fuse. Continue reading

North Judson Residents Reminded of Fireworks Rules

 Getting an early jump on your Independence Day celebration could prove costly if you live in North Judson. Town Marshal Doug Vessely reminds residents fireworks can only be legally discharged on June 29, 30 and July 1-3 from 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset; July 4 from 10 a.m. until midnight and July 5-9 from 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset. Starke County Fireworks Fundraiser Set for May 16

 In just a few short months, America will be celebrating another birthday. The City of Knox is hoping to offset costs of a local celebration with several fundraisers.

A port-a-pit chicken sale is set during the city-wide yard sale in May. This fundraiser will be May 16 at the Knox South Side Fire Station. Volunteers will sell half chicken orders for $7.00 plus pit-tatoes for $3.00 from 10 a.m. until sold out. All proceeds will benefit the county-wide fireworks celebration on Friday, July 3.

Tickets for this event can be purchased at Knox City Hall.

Contract Approved for Fireworks Celebration

 The Knox City Council approved a contract for the annual Fourth of July Fireworks celebration at the Starke County Airport.

The celebration will be held on Friday, July 3. The contract with Mad Bomber is for $8,000 which is an increase of $200 from last year. The contract in 2013 was $7,500, so the price has steadily increased. The other contract terms are the same as in previous years.

A copy of the city’s insurance and the contractor’s insurance will be provided to the Starke County Aviation Board.

Knox Residents to Help Decide Fireworks Date

 Knox Mayor Rick Chambers and the Knox City Council members want the citizens of Knox decide when to hold the fireworks celebration in July.

The council members held discussion last week on a date to hold the fireworks. The Fourth of July is on a Saturday this year which would be the ideal date to hold the celebration, but the council doesn’t want to interfere with family plans residents may have for the day. However, it is the official holiday and the council members thought it would be appropriate to hold the display on the Fourth of July.

Celebrate the New Year Safely with Fireworks

 If you would like to celebrate the new year by discharging consumer fireworks, you may do so today beginning at 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Keep in mind that no person may use, ignite or discharge consumer fireworks on any public street or in any public park within the corporate limits of the City of Knox at any time. According to the ordinance, if the use of discharging consumer fireworks results in a fire and damage is determined to be caused by “negligence or the willful disregard or violation of any of the provisions”, that person will be fined an amount not to exceed $2,500 for the dispatch of firefighters and equipment.

Fireworks Show a Success in Starke County

 The fireworks show at the Starke County Airport held one week ago today was well attended, according to Knox Mayor Rick Chambers.

Chambers told the Knox City Council members this week that with the fireworks committee’s fundraisers, gate collections, donations from the three county commissioners, several monetary donations from businesses and individuals, the town of Hamlet and a generous donation from the town of North Judson, the only loss the city of Knox will realize is $767. The show was $8,550 and $7,783 was collected.

Follow Ordinances Pertaining to Fireworks

 There are laws governing when fireworks can be ignited in cities and towns in Indiana.

For instance, in the city of Knox, the use, discharge or ignition of consumer fireworks by any person or other entity is prohibited in the corporate limits except between the hours of 5 p.m. and two hours after sunset from June 29 to July 3 and from July 5 to July 9. On July 4, fireworks may be discharged from 10 a.m. to midnight.

Play it Safe When Using Fireworks

 The Fourth of July is an exciting holiday filled with picnics and other celebrations that may include fireworks. Indiana State Police officers urge you to play it safe when using fireworks.

Only adults can purchase fireworks. A person 18 and older has to be present when anyone younger than 18 is using or possessing consumer fireworks. Children must be supervised at all times when fireworks are in use.
