Oregon-Davis PTA Plans ‘Pictures with Santa’ Fundraiser, During Next Week’s Christmas Programs
The recently-established Oregon-Davis PTA is coming up with some creative ways to raise money for the school corporation. “During our Christmas programs on December 11 and 12 at the high school, the PTA will be taking pictures with Santa and have hot cocoa and cookies available,” Superintendent Dr. Don Harman explains. “Pictures will be five dollars, to have a student take their picture with Santa, and so, then, the PTA is obviously trying to raise funds to help the school district.”
Oregon-Davis Students Help Raise $600 for Tippecanoe Valley Bus Stop Accident Victims
Oregon-Davis students recently helped collect funds for the families affected by last month’s bus stop accident in Fulton County. “We had a fundraiser, a hat day, November 9,” Superintendent Dr. Don Harman told the school board last week. “Really neat that our students participated, and we raised $600.”
North Judson-San Pierre Schools Partner with Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation
North Judson-San Pierre is the latest school to form a partnership with the Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation. Harold Welter provided the NJSP School Board with an informative presentation when they met Tuesday night.
Welter explained to board members that the foundation was established in memory of his daughter Cheryl who passed away in an automobile accident her senior year. He provided a bit of background, saying she was a major people person and had been accepted into Purdue University’s School of Child and Family Counseling.
He said Cheryl’s love of helping others and interest in children inspired him to focus the foundation’s mission on helping students at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
Another reason they decided to go with this kind of assistance is because Harold saw a lack of available resources that allowed teachers to apply for immediate assistance. The fund was created as a way to keep teachers from having to pay out of pocket for various things like school supplies, field trip fees and other little items that can really add up after awhile. Bolt for Blessings Fun Run Fundraiser
Culver Community Schools currently assist one-hundred underprivileged students by providing backpacks filled with food to take home on the weekends. This year, during Culver Fall Fest on October 7th, you have the opportunity to help out and work out with the Bolt for Blessings fundraiser.
Annually, it costs around $125,000 to purchase the food and supplies needed. This event serves as the primary source of funding for the Blessings in a Backpack program. The race registration fee costs $15 for students K-12 and general admission is $25. If you register online prior to race day, you have will receive a T-Shirt. Businesses and interested individuals have a chance to be sponsors and have their name appear on the shirts for $150. Continue reading

NJ-SP Elementary Students Learn Value of Charity in Cancer Education
Students at North Judson-San Pierre Elementary School had the chance to learn about health and cancer prevention, last week.
Students in each grade level participated in the American Cancer Society’s “Relay Recess” program. The event takes cancer education to the classroom by recognizing those afflicted with the disease and teaching students about charitable causes.

Winamac woman pays it forward with a haircut

A Winamac hairstylist is sporting a new hairdo for a good cause. Emily Larkin agreed to shave her head once she raised $3,000 for Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. That’s where her sister, Christina, also a hairstylist, was treated as a teenager when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Larkin said her bold new haircut was inspired by the Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders who shaved their head in support of Coach Chuck Pagano’s leukemia diagnosis inspired Larkin to “take it off.” She nearly doubled her fundraising goal, thanks to generous support from the community. Her sister Christina did the honors during the halftime show of last night’s Winamac Community High School basketball game. Larkin said she “kind of likes” her new short locks, which she will be sporting for Christina’s wedding next month.
Abate Fundraiser Tonight at Bass Lake Golf Course
Don’t forget the Abate Fund Raiser tonight at the Bass Lake Golf Course. It all gets started at 6 p.m. and you’ll be helping the community efforts of a great group. The cost is only $10.00 for food and dancing.
The band Half Track will be performing and Ted Hayes talked yesterday to bass guitarist Terry Young of the band. Terry is also a member of Abate, and talks about what the money from the event will be used for.
“This is a fundraiser for Abate in general, they use this money for their motorcycle education-type things and stuff down state,” said Young.
Ted took the opportunity to ask Terry about the band.
“The band has been doing well, we’re working on getting a new CD out. Hopefully we’ll have it completed by the end of June and looking forward to it, really,” said Young.
This is one of the hardest working bands around. Terry tells how many weekends the band is out.
“We do about 32-35 weekends a year, we kind of cut it back because years in the prior we were doing over 40, so it’s kind of nice,” said Young.
The event is called Fistful of Dollars, and it’s being held tonight at the Bass Lake Golf Course.
