A $5,000 fine is back in place on the owner of a dilapidated garage in Hamlet. Town officials first imposed the fine in June, saying the garage on Railroad Street near the former bank building was unsafe, with a partially-collapsed roof. But they agreed to give the owner another chance to tear it down or clean it up, after he pleaded with town officials for an extension.

The Town of Hamlet continues looking for ways it can keep better track of its water. The fire department has begun estimating its water usage in recent months. Now, the town’s planning to install water meters in the buildings at the Starke County Fairgrounds.

Walorski Responds to Hamlet Railroad Inquiry
Hamlet officials remain hopeful repairs will soon be made to the rough railroad crossing on Starke Street. They reached out to U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski for assistance. In a letter dated May 10, 2016, she advised an inspector from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Indianapolis Field Office has checked the tracks and found them to be in compliance with the agency’s regulations.
