Don’t Burn It or Bury it, Bring it Down to Starke County’s Environmental Days
If you’re unsure about how to properly dispose of something, chances are you’ll be able to unload it at the Starke County Environmental Management facility this weekend. The hazardous waste collection event is located at 3835 East 250 North in Knox and runs Friday, June 12 from 3:30 until 5 pm and Saturday, June 13 from 8:30 am until 1 pm. Historians Discuss Plans for Lincoln Highway Byway
Representatives of the Indiana Lincoln Highway Association met with local historians last week in LaPorte to develop a coordinated plan for the development of a Lincoln Highway “byway.” The “byway” is the route U.S. 30 took when it was first developed in 1913 and then rerouted in 1928. The 1928 update of the highway (old U.S. 30) brought it through Hamlet and Grovertown in northern Starke County.Fire Destroys Abandoned House

Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest
A passenger in a vehicle that was stopped because it did not have a windshield ended up taking a ride in a police car. Starke County Sheriff’s Office Chief Detective Rob Olejniczak pulled over a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Shannon Watts of North Judson on 500 North at 750 East in Hamlet on Wednesday, May 26, according to a news release. Hamlet Park Board Prepares for Summer
The Hamlet Park is being prepared for the summer season. When the Park Board met recently, members took action to replace the old water fountain and to provide a proper drain for the excess water. A number of new trees may be planted after the Board reviews prices. Park security will be updated with new and improved cameras, and consideration will be given to providing a cold drink machine in the shelter. The Board also approved a $1000 donation to support this summer’s Yellowstone Trail Fest.
Hamlet Postpones Tax Hearing
The hearing to re-establish the Town of Hamlet’s Cumulative Capital Development Fund, originally scheduled for last night’s regular Board meeting, was postponed to a special meeting Monday, June 15th. The postponement was necessary due to an error in the published notice of the hearing.
The fund has been an ongoing levy, but needs to be re-established every three years by the Town Board. Continue reading
SCILL Center to Honor Graduating Students
The Starke County Initiative for Lifelong Learning is hosting an award ceremony to recognize the accomplishments of their 2015 class. The program takes place tonight at 1300 Kloeckner Drive in the Knox Industrial Park and will commence at 6 pm (CST) .

Starke County citizens who plan to get the golf carts out this season need to have their vehicle inspected and approved by a member of the Sheriff’s department before their first cruise. Inspections are annually required. Continue reading
Starke County Postal Patrons Help Stamp Out Hunger
Starke County postal patrons did their part to “stamp out hunger” during a recent U.S. Postal Service food drive. Donations placed next to mail boxes on Saturday, May 9 were picked up by mail carriers and given to the Community Services of Starke County food pantry. Executive Director Joan Haugh says they got 1,739 pounds of food. The Knox Post Office collected 1,230 pounds of food; North Judson picked up 475 pounds, and the Hamlet Post Office delivered 34 pounds of food.
O-D Students Perform Well on ECA Tests
The End of Course Assessment (ECA) test results at Oregon-Davis Schools have the administration excited about the progress the students are making in Math and English/Language Arts. The ECAs are taken at the end of the school year to measure student growth.
Superintendent Greg Briles boasted the efforts of the 10th grade students.
Fletcher Cemetery Association to Dedicate Restored Monument
The newly restored veterans monument in one of Starke County’s oldest cemeteries will be dedicated during a special Memorial Day service. Members of the Fletcher Cemetery Association launched a fundraising campaign last year to rehabilitate the statue, which dates to the 1950s. There was no more room to add names to it, and the structure was giving way. Continue reading
Wireless Infrastructure Upgrade Leads Summer Projects at O-D
Some extensive projects will be in the works this summer at the Oregon-Davis School Corporation.
Thanks to the federal E-Rate Program, Superintendent Greg Briles says the wireless access and switches will be upgraded in both school buildings.
No Funding Loss Expected at Oregon-Davis Schools
One school corporation in the area will not worry about funding cuts for the 2015-2016 school year.
