Starke County Voters Split Between Incumbents, Newcomers
North Judson will have a new clerk-treasurer in January. Democrat Alicia Collins beat incumbent Republican Donna Henry by a six-point margin, while incumbent North Judson Council President Wendy Hoppe fended off a challenge from Democrat Joan Haugh to hold onto her seat. Hamlet Officials Move Forward With Demolition Plans
The Hamlet Town Board last night took action to accept a proposal from JD Excavating to raze two abandoned houses in the town. The work will begin pending the building inspector’s final approval.
Discussion followed a resident’s inquiry about providing Hamlet residents access to a Bank ATM near the Town Hall. An alternative plan also under discussion was for the town itself to purchase am automatic teller machine to provide the service. Continue reading
Hamlet Man Faces Meth Charges
A Monday morning home visit by Starke County Community Corrections ended with a trip to jail for a Hamlet man. They contacted the Hamlet Police Department after doing a routine check on 51-year-old Donald Frazier and reportedly finding suspicious items. Continue reading

Civic Pride Shines in Hamlet
Work continues to revitalize downtown Hamlet. Lee Nagai has installed a street light at the downtown intersection of Davis and Starke Streets that is similar to those used there decades ago. The town board is considering installation of additional street lights, of the same style, in the downtown area sometime in the future. Food Pantry Emerges Victorious in WKVI Sports Bet
Starke County residents who need a hand up are the big winners in the good-natured bet between WKVI’s Nathan Welter and Mary Perren over the outcome of the recent Knox v. North Judson-San Pierre football game. Since Nathan is a graduate and Knox and they lost, part of his payoff was hosting an hour-long food drive at Heartland Markets in North Judson. Hamlet Town Board Outlines Budget Schedule
A public hearing is scheduled September 23rd. on the 2016 budget for the Town of Hamlet. Action to adopt the budget is expected to be taken October 21st.
The Town Attorney, Martin Bedrock, discussed with the board action that can be taken to remove abandoned, fire damaged and unsafe structures. Notices have been mailed to the owners of several such properties, who have 10 days to request a hearing on the matter. Continue reading

The ballots are set for the Nov. 3 General Elections in Starke County. Voters in the towns of North Judson and Hamlet will elect clerk-treasurers. In North Judson, Republican incumbent Donna Henry has drawn a challenge from Democrat Alicia (Amidei) Collins. North Judson voters will also choose between incumbent Republican Wendy Hoppe and Democrat Joan Haugh for the Ward 2 town council seat. Democrat Ward 1 incumbent Jane Ellen Felchuk and Republican Ward 3 candidate Nathan Bradley are both unopposed. Continue reading
Starke County Election Board to Finalize Ballots Today
Starke County Election Board members will finalize ballots for the November General Election when they meet today. Knox, North Judson and Hamlet will all have municipal elections on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Also voters who reside in Jackson, Wayne, California, and Railroad Townships will weigh in on the proposed North Judson-San Pierre Schools general fund referendum.
