Hamlet’s Starke Street Project Moving Ahead

The main portion of Hamlet’s Starke Street rehabilitation project is expected to get underway in the next couple of weeks. Project engineer Lee Nagai told the town council Tuesday that he’s asked paving contractor Walsh & Kelly to wait until after this Friday to get to work. “Between school being out and whatnot, I thought it would be better,” he said. “I mean, it’s already late because of the weather, so we’ll just wait until school’s over and hopefully, they can get started either next week or the following week.”

Campaign Signs Not Permitted in State Right-of-Way

Candidates in the May Primary Election are starting to get out in the public to attempt to collect supporters. Officials with the Indiana Department of Transportation urge candidates and campaign assistants to keep campaign signs out of the state’s right-of-way.

Signs are not permitted in intersections, interchanges or rights-of-way that run parallel to highways. Where the right-of-way is not clearly marked, boundaries may be estimated as the fence line, the back of a ditch or behind utility poles.

Two State Roads Reopen after Flooding Event

Two state roads are back open now that flood waters have receded.

The Indiana Department of Transportation opened State Road 39 between State Road 10 and U.S. 30 and State Road 8 between U.S. 35 and State Road 39. The roads were closed when high water from historic flooding intruded on the roadways in late February. Medaryville Council Approves Engineering Contract for Upcoming Community Crossings Project

The Town of Medaryville is getting ready for its summer street paving project. Last week, the town council approved a contract with McMahon Associates for engineering work, according to Clerk-Treasurer Judy Harwood. She says the project will include the reconstruction of Main Street and a couple other roads in town.

INDOT Launches Mobile App

Just in time for holiday travel, the Indiana Department of Transportation has launched a new mobile app. It offers statewide, real-time traffic information – like current traffic speeds, road conditions, and travel advisories – for interstates, U.S. highways, and state roads. Users can also get custom alerts on accidents, road closures, and construction, and report hazards to INDOT.

La Porte Emergency Responders Investigate Fatal Crash

 

A single vehicle crash claimed the life of a 20-year-old man Wednesday afternoon.

La Porte County police say a car driven by Cody Strauch was traveling west on U.S. 20 and went off the north side of the road and stuck a tree in the 7400 E. block of U.S. 20 near New Prairie High School. After the impact, the vehicle spun off into the yard for approximately 30 feet, according to the report. Continue reading

INDOT Engineering Scholarship Offers Financial Assistance and Job Opportunities

The Indiana Department of Transportation is offering a scholarship program to civil engineering students that also includes summer and post-graduation employment opportunities.

The INDOT Scholarship program utilizes federal funds to offer up to $3,125 per semester or $2,083 per trimester for up to five years of post-secondary civil engineering education. The scholarship funds can be applied to educational expenses, fees and books. In return, recipients would work for INDOT in full-time, paid positions during summer breaks and upon graduation. Starke County U.S. 30 Planning Committee to Hold First Meeting Tonight

Potential upgrades to U.S. 30 will be discussed this evening by a group of local stakeholders. The Indiana Department of Transportation may consider upgrading the highway to freeway standards in the coming decade. Starke County has assembled a group of people who’d be impacted by the change, to come up with some recommendations for INDOT to consider.
