INDOT Prepares for Busy Travel Weekend

The combination of the Men’s Final Four in Indianapolis and spring break traffic will make for a busy weekend on Indiana’s highways. Of the four teams playing in the NCAA tournament, three are within a five-hour drive of Indiana. INDOT advises motorists should also expect additional traffic on interstates 65, 69, 74 and U.S. 31. Officials say contractors will pull back construction barrels and barricades as much as possible on highways to welcome basketball fans. Some road restrictions will remain in place for ongoing projects, though. They include I-65 north of Louisville for construction of a new Ohio River bridge and I-74 in Montgomery County between State Road 25 and U.S. 231. U.S. 31 is also down to one lane in each direction north of Indianapolis between State Roads 38 and 32 in Westfield. I-69 is reduced to one lane in each direction on weekdays as well for bridge rehabilitation at State Road 4 near Ashley. Continue reading →

INDOT Begins Highway Signal Upgrades

?????The Indiana Department of Transportation is improving traffic signals at several intersections along U.S. 30 and U.S. 6 in Lake and Porter Counties. A total of 11 lights will be upgraded to feature flashing yellow arrows. They allow left-turning traffic to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians and turn when a suitable gap is available. INDOT officials say this type of signal improves intersection efficiency by using cross-traffic gaps to allow more left turns. Continue reading →

Sen. Donnelly Believes Ample Time Exists For Hoosier Line Fix

U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly is continuing comments on the operation of the Hoosier State Line.

The four-day per week train between Indianapolis and Chicago was initially anticipated to cease service on April 1st of this year. That announcement came after a Federal Railroad Administration decision that would require Indiana to serve as a railroad carrier.

INDOT Offers Tips to Stay Safe on Slick Roads

A disabled or stranded vehicle could potentially be a life or death situation due to cold temperatures and extended response times for police and tow truck drivers. If you do venture out, let someone know your route of travel, and keep your gas tank full when driving in cold weather. Pack a winter survival kit of blankets, extra warm clothes, a flashlight and extra batteries, a brightly-colored cloth to tie on your antenna for visibility, sand or a bag of cat litter to use for traction, a shovel, candles and matches, non-perishable, high-calorie foods like nuts, raisins and protein or energy bars, newspapers for insulation, a first aid kit and jumper cables. Road Construction Project in Marshall County on Hold

The 7th Road project in Marshall County will not be completed this year.

The project supervisor overseeing the construction, Bart Trester, told the Marshall County Commissioners that the current state of the project on Michigan Road will remain through the winter.

“The traffic has been running on phase three section of the roundabout and will probably remain like this through the winter,” said Trester. “The contractors finished placing the HMA base and intermediate lifts along the main line from Seltenright Ditch to Linden Trail and the HMA base from Seltenright Ditch to the roundabout. Due to weather limitations, the contractor will more than likely shut down operations for the winter. They have opened Lilac Road and Linden Trail for thru-traffic for over the winter.”

INDOT Worker Assaulted

A man assaulted an INDOT worker after being confronted about driving around a barricade on Friday morning.

The INDOT worker was sitting in his truck on a lunch break when he saw a man in a maroon pickup drive around barricades that were blocking the road in the southbound lane of State Road 331 just south of Bourbon in a construction zone.

According to a report from the Indiana State Police, the worker got out of his vehicle and attempted to stop the driver. The worker told police that the driver struck him with the driver’s side mirror and then exited the truck and yelled profanities at him. The driver then proceeded to punch him several times in the face, according to police.

Oversize Load to Travel Through Northern Indiana

An oversize load traveling through northern Indiana the next five nights may snarl traffic in Porter, LaPorte, Starke and Marshall Counties as it passes through. The slow-moving, oversize, overweight load will have a police escort from the Port of Indiana to the Ohio border. INDOT Schedules Storm Water Open House in LaPorte

INDOT officials are hosting an open house tomorrow in LaPorte to share information about their statewide storm water program. It supports state and federal storm water rules. INDOT is seeking input and feedback. Informational materials will be available and will also be posted on INDOT’s Ecology & Waterway Permitting web page at http://www.in.gov/indot/2892.htm. The open house starts at 4 p.m. CDT at the INDOT LaPorte District office at 315 Boyd Blvd. It’s one of six statewide meetings on the issue.
