Winamac Park Board President Calls for Repairs to Wellness Center Parking Lot
Concerns about the condition of the parking lot at the Community Wellness Center of Winamac and who’s responsible for maintaining it are being raised by the town’s park board president.
“I have never seen a more atrocious parking lot in my life, as that I see up there where the pool was at the Wellness Center right now,” Park Board President Courtney Poor said during last week’s meeting. “And I am telling you that I will be going to the board meeting on the 14th and getting myself on the agenda, to tell the town board exactly that, as a concerned citizen.”
Pool Project Won’t Be Included in Winamac Park Board’s Grant Application This Year
The Winamac Park Board reiterated Thursday that it will not apply for a grant for the town’s swimming pool project this year. The town has put the project on hold, due to concerns that money wouldn’t be available to run the pool if it’s built. The Winamac Pool Committee has proposed a cheaper option, but so far, it hasn’t gotten the official support of the town council.
Winamac Park Board Presented with $6,000 in Donations for New Playground Equipment
Efforts to replace the equipment in the Winamac Town Park’s toddler playground got a financial boost during Thursday’s park board meeting. The Winamac Eagles presented a $4,000 donation in memory of Steve Girton, while the town’s American Legion post presented a check for $2,000.

Winamac Town Council Approves Request to Purchase Public Alert Service
Utility customers in the Town of Winamac will soon have the opportunity to be directly notified of various alerts thanks to a request submitted by 1st Deputy Clerk Kim Burke.
At Monday’s Winamac Town Council meeting, Burke told members about a system called Public Alert which would allow her to individually send members of the community notifications that would impact them specifically.
“We can send out like emergency snow removal when we need them all to park on one side of the street, waterline breaks, if we close down a road. From what I understand, they can rig it up with our billing system.” Burke provided a potential example, “I can go in there and say ‘look, these people on Burson Street, you’re water’s shut off, we have a break’ and I can send them an alert.” Continue reading

Winamac Park Board Discusses Continued Tree Removal, Pay Raise for Secretary
The removal of dying ash trees continues to be a concern for the Winamac Park Board, as it puts together its 2018 budget. Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo estimates about 75 ash trees remain at the town park. He told the park board Monday that about six of those will soon have to be cut down by a contractor. Many of those are in danger of falling on shelters.
Winamac Park Board Seeks Public Input on Veterans Memorial Park Upgrades
The Winamac Park Board is looking for the public’s input on proposed upgrades to Veterans Memorial Park. Board members have been considering the addition of a decorative archway, and the VFW and American Legion have each offered to donate a bench. On top of that, the American Legion has offered to place its cannon in the park, should it decide to sell its current building.

Winamac officials are optimistic that the town will be able to get a $200,000 grant to rebuild its swimming pool.
