Knox Wraps Up Street Paving, Prepares for Larger Road Projects
The City of Knox used one-time money from the state to pave additional streets this year. Street Superintendent Jeff Borg told the Board of Works on Wednesday they used $74,000 in Community Crossings grant funds along with the $54,100 in local money budgeted for street paving to have Rieth-Reilly Construction Co., Inc. do the work and said he’s happy with the finished product. Knox Receives Reimbursement from Blight Elimination Program
The City of Knox should be able to successfully tear down 10 houses with funds from a blight elimination grant. So far four houses have been removed with funds from the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority, and another four are under contract for demolition. Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston says the city should know any day whether two more houses are accepted into the program. Knox Board of Works Talks Truck Route Enforcement
Enforcement of the City of Knox truck route has some over-the-road drivers seeking alternate routes to access the industrial park. Mayor Dennis Estok to the board of works yesterday he’s gotten several telephone calls and emails since the stepped-up patrols started earlier this month. Bids for Knox Sidewalk Program to be Awarded May 8
Seven applications for the 50/50 sidewalk replacement program have been reviewed by Knox Street Superintendent Jeff Borg.
Borg told the Knox Board of Public Works last week that he has invited contractors to bid on the projects. He has taken one contractor around to all of the proposed sites. The bids will be awarded in a special meeting on Friday, May 8.
Knox Street Department Looking Toward Spring Activities
Knox Street Superintendent Jeff Borg said the road crews have attempted to work on spring projects, but the snow was a surprise on Monday.
Street department employees were filling potholes and working grading alleys when the storm hit. Luckily, Borg said, the equipment was still prepared for snow removal.
Knox Street Department Ready for Next Snow Event
Street Superintendent Jeff Borg told the Knox Board of Public Works this week that operations in the city are going well this winter.
There has been some cost savings in getting sand from Area Excavating. The cost is two dollars cheaper than their previous supplier. They don’t have to go as far to pick up the material. Borg said he has been able to see a difference in the cost and wear and tear of vehicles. He coordinates a pick up time with the company and brings back up to ten tons of sand as needed. Borg said the sand is mixed with salt, and the combination works well during a snow event. Porter County and LaPorte County department use the same company for their road product as well.
Knox Street Department Keeping Busy
Knox Street Superintendent Jeff Borg told the Board of Public Works this week that the leaf pick-up program is keeping the employees busy. He added that the department is gearing up for the winter season. The first order of road salt should be placed at the first of December but the supply the city has now is healthy. He said prices jumped 50 percent per ton of road salt over last year’s price. Borg stated that the city should be in good shape and hopes that the weather isn’t as bad as last year.
Knox City Council to Review Proposed Street Paving List
The Knox City Council members were given a proposed street paving list when they met last week.
Knox Mayor Rick Chambers noted that he received the list from Street Superintendent Jeff Borg and the council is expected to review the list and approve it at a future meeting.
Street Paving Schedule Approved for City of Knox
The Knox City Council recently approved the street paving schedule for this summer.
“We do have some intersections that we’re going to take care of that are in really bad shape. We’re still able to pave up to a half of a mile of streets. We used to be able to pave one mile and now we’re down to a half of a mile with the same budget,” explained Street Superintendent, Jeff Borg.
