Knox-Center Township Fire Department Celebrates 100 Years

In 1911, the Knox Fire Department came into existence. The first Fire Chief went on to become the Governor of Indiana. Knox’s first Fire Chief was none other than Henry F. Schricker.

To celebrate the 100 year Anniversary of the Fire Department, the current volunteer firemen are planning a huge celebration.

It all begins Saturday morning with an 11:00 a.m. corn and sausage roast dinner at the Southside Firehouse. Inside you’ll find various memorabilia and photos to view.

Police, Fire Statistics for July

The Knox City Police Department had 483 calls in the month of July, responded to six accidents and officers completed 31 incident reports.

There were 4 Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated arrests, 3 Public Intoxication arrests, 3 Battery arrests, 2 warrant arrests, 16 people arrested on 18 traffic charges, 25 people arrested on 36 criminal charges and 2 juveniles arrested on 2 charges. Continue reading

Andy Howes’ Remains to be Laid to Rest at Arlington National Cemetery

The remains of Chief Warrant officer, Andy Howes, now move on to a final resting place in Arlington National Cemetery after Memorial Services were held in Knox yesterday. Those services will be Friday, August 5th.

The family had brought him back to Knox hoping the ceremonies would bring closure to the community that nurtured him in his formative years.

Starke County Surveyor to Burn Brush Collected from Storm Sewer Project

Starke County Surveyor, Dennis Estok, appeared before the Knox City Council last week to ask for permission to burn off brush collected from the John Street storm system maintenance project. The County has jurisdiction over about 1,000 feet that drains into the Cavanaugh ditch. Excavating crews are coming in soon to channel that portion to give it a uniform slope to the outlet into the ditch.

Estok said there is brush and debris in the system as well as sediment.

The Council gave its permission to burn the brush. Estok estimated it would be only two small piles.

Starke County Prosecutor to Review Autopsy Report in South Bend

Starke County Prosecutor, Nicholas Bourff said that he and Deputy Prosecutor Mary Ryan and two detectives will be headed to South Bend to gain information into the death of a Knox toddler that happened June 19th

“We’re meeting with the pathologist who did the forensic autopsy,” said Bourff. “It has taken him longer to do the autopsy than we originally anticipated because he’s done more work than we originally knew he would be doing.”

Andy Howes Returns Home Today

Chief Warrant Officer, Andy Howes, returns to Knox today 41 years after being killed in action during the Vietnam War.

His remains were positively identified by a DNA match with family members.

He is the final member of a four-man helicopter crew to be returned for burial. After services here tomorrow, the remains will be flown to Arlington National Cemetery to his final resting place.

Katlynn Surfus Crowned Miss Harvest Fest

Katlynn Surfus, a 16-year-old Knox High School Junior, was selected Saturday as the Hiss Harvest Days Queen.

“I’m very surprised,” she laughed. “I look forward to looking at all of the stuff with a new perspective now. I look forward to the bike contest every year. It’s always fun.”

Community Helps Fill Food Pantry

Cecilia Torres, Services Coordinator at Community Services of Starke County, says the community has stepped up to the plate with donations to the Food Pantry.

Only three weeks ago, we were reporting that the Food Pantry had no food on the shelves and only one package of hot dogs was in the meat section.

Torres especially wanted to thank officials of the Starke County 4-H Fair Livestock Auction for directing bidders to the food pantry. A number of the winning bidders gave their purchases to the Food Pantry.

Cecilia said the bidders had turkeys, ducks and chickens dressed for distribution.

Knox Redskin Brigade Prepares for Another Season

The Knox Redskin Brigade is in the middle of its summer camp and band members have been busy preparing for the fall marching season. Director Craige Phipps invites you to a community performance of the show “By the Water’s Edge” on Thursday, August 4th at 8:45 p.m. at the High School.

This year’s show tells the story of a watering hole that has been touched by man, infiltrated by man and then creating balance between man and beast in the environment.

Knox Cruise Night is This Saturday

The 5th Annual Knox Cruise Night is set for this Saturday, August 6th. Registration and instructions will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Sandy Acres Park and the cruise begins at 5:00 p.m. and ends at 6:30 p.m.

The route this year will take hot rods, motorcycles, custom and classic cars and trucks from Sandy Acres Park, north down Main Street, around the Starke County Courthouse and back down Main Street to Sandy Acres Park.

James Campbell Charged with Possessing a Stolen Weapon

Starke County Police officers arrested James Campbell, 43, of Knox early Thursday morning after he failed to comply with police when officers ordered him to get out of his vehicle and away from loaded weapons.

Police were called to a church on Toto Road after a citizen reported a male subject acting suspiciously on the property. When police arrived, the reporting officer found James Campbell in his vehicle. The officer got out of his vehicle and approached Campbell’s vehicle and asked him to step out of the truck. Campbell ignored the officer. Campbell was asked several more times to exit the vehicle. The reporting officer noted in his report that he asked Campbell to show him his hands and Campbell reportedly started to fidget with something underneath his seat. The officer drew his weapon and told Campbell to show him his hands. He did show his hands and had nothing in them at the time.

More Details about Memorial Services for Andy Howes

WKVI has learned some of the details of the services for Chief Warrant Officer Andy Howes, a Knox native whose remains are being transported from Hawaii to Indianapolis on Monday. He was lost 41 years ago in a helicopter crash in Vietnam, and although his remains were sent to Hawaii in 1988, they were only recently identified through DNA analysis.

Services will be held in Knox on Tuesday, and then the body will be sent to its final resting place in Arlington National Cemetery on August 5th. Services are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night, with calling after 5:00 p.m. at the Knox Community Center.

Memorial Services for Andy Howes Scheduled for Tuesday, August 2nd

Classmates from as far as Florida, New York and Delaware and throughout Indiana are coming to Knox for memorial services for Chief Warrant Officer, Andy Howes. Many of his Knox High School classmates have MIA bracelets that they wore for a number of years, or put away in a known chest awaiting his return. The family has invited all who have bracelets to put them in the casket with the remains.

Howes will be returning to Knox on Monday, with a Patriot Guard escort, and memorial services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Knox Community Center.

Knox Residents Arrested after Hit and Run Accident

Two Knox residents were arrested after a traffic accident in Winamac on Sunday.

The Winamac Police Department investigated the scene where driver, Mathew Hall of Indianapolis, stated that he was stopped at the traffic light at the bridge construction site on US 35 in Winamac when John Rupert, of Knox, rear-ended his vehicle. Both drivers exited the vehicle and Hall told police that he spoke to Rupert and his speech was slurred and he appeared to be “messed up”. Hall said that Rupert and his wife, Charlotte Rupert, who was a passenger in the vehicle, then ran toward an apartment complex south of the scene. The pair were later located inside an apartment hiding and were later arrested and taken to the Pulaski County Jail.

Knox City Council Discusses 2012 Budget

“Even though money is tight, I still think we can grant a 2% salary increase.”

That was told to the Knox City Council this week by Knox City Clerk-Treasurer, Jeff Houston. The two percent increase recommended for all employees and officials was passed unanimously by the Council on the first reading of the salary ordinance.

The State Board of Accounts has completed its audit of the 2012 budget.

Two Knox Residents Arrested on Burglary, Theft Charges

Two Knox residents were arrested Friday on charges of Burglary and Theft.

Knox Police Department officers were called to the Woods Apartments for a report of burglary. Christopher Acevedo and Amanda Hamilton told police that when they returned home, a computer, an XBox system and games were missing from their residence. Police later went to the Pawn Shop and found that their XBox system was recently pawned. One suspect, Charles Barnett, allegedly pawned the XBox and tried to pawn the computer but didn’t know the password so the pawn shop would not accept that item. The other suspect, Rhonda Gayheart, then came into the store and stated that they were pawning the computer for a friend and didn’t know the password. After a while, Gayheart, who reportedly lives in the same apartment complex as the victims in the burglary incident, reported an attempted break-in at her apartment. She didn’t report anything stolen.
