Winamac residents will have a chance to weigh in on the town’s application for grant funds for park upgrades. The town’s park board plans to apply for a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to help pay for new restrooms and new equipment for the toddler playground in the Town Park. The park board has money available for both projects from donations, but the grant would allow the town to buy even more playground equipment, while saving some of the Park Gift Fund for future projects.
More pickleball courts could be in the Winamac Town Park’s future, but the town’s park board isn’t ready to give up on tennis, either. During Thursday’s meeting, Park Board President Courtney Poor said he’s heard from a couple people who’d like to see the Town Park’s remaining tennis court turned into two more pickleball courts.
Upgrades to the Winamac Town Park’s restrooms and toddler playground may get some financial support from this year’s round of Land and Water Conservation Fund grants. Last year, the town’s park board applied for $200,000 for its swimming pool rebuilding project. It wasn’t selected, but officials with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources say it would have a good chance this year, according to park board member Pat Bawcum. The problem is that the town has decided not to pursue the project for the time-being, due to concerns that money wouldn’t be available to operate the pool if it’s built.
The Town of Francesville may be looking into adding a park board. Clerk-Treasurer Linda Bennett says the idea was brought to the town council Monday by a representative from the UpTown Project. “They asked about maybe getting a park board, so that, maybe, we could get some grants,” Bennett explains. “And that will be looked into. We’re going to contact some other towns to see what theirs is.”
Now that the Town of Winamac has pulled its financial support of the swimming pool rebuilding project, the town’s park board is thinking about other projects that could benefit from potential grant funding.

Winamac’s swimming pool rebuilding effort appears to have come to an end. The town council narrowly decided Wednesday not to proceed with the project until the town has the money to support the ongoing maintenance of the pool. Without the town council’s financial support, the park board followed suit Thursday, voting to stop work on the project.
The Winamac Park Board will get an update tonight on grant funding for its swimming pool rebuilding project. The town is applying for $200,000 in matching money from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. The total cost of rebuilding the pool is expected to be between $500,000 and $600,000.
You can now make a donation to the Starke County Park Board. While the park board oversees a few different facilities, including the Bass Lake Beach and Campground and the Starke County Forest, it does not have a dedicated funding source from the county government. However, the county council last week created a “special non-reverting park and recreation fund,” designed to let the park board accept “gifts, donations, and subsidies.”
Whether Winamac’s swimming pool rebuilding project will get $200,000 in grant funding should be known within the next couple months.
The Winamac Park Board will consider upgrades to Veterans Memorial Park tonight. Board members have been discussing the addition of a decorative archway, and the VFW and American Legion have each offered to donate a bench. On top of that, the American Legion has offered to place its cannon in the park, should it decide to sell its current building.
The Winamac Park Board will hold its regular monthly meeting tonight. Other than Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo’s monthly report, no specific discussion or action items are listed on the advance agenda.
The Starke County Park Board may have missed this year’s deadline to apply for a grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, but plans are already in the works for next year’s grant cycle.
