North Judson Clerk-Treasurer, Connie Miller, informed WKVI that a water leak has been detected off Sheridan Street between Laurel and Cherry Streets. The Street Department is currently working on correcting the issue. If any residents experience discolored water, let the water run for a little while until it clears up.
Starke County Commissioners, North Judson Town Board to Make Yearly Appointments
The new year brings new appointments to government Boards. Today, the Starke County Commissioners will appoint officers to the Starke Regular Drainage Board, Planning Commission, Kankakee Iroquois Regional Plan Commission, Health Board, Hospital Community Board, Alcoholic Beverage Board, City Plan Commission, Regional Workforce Board, Wage Commission, P.T.A.B.O.A. Board, Innkeepers Tax/Visitors Association Board, and Community Corrections Board. The Commissioners are likely to reorganize as well.
North Judson Town Board Receives 2011 Budget Order
The North Judson Town Board received its 2011 budget order from the State. The Board had to cut $5,242 out of the Town’s Cumulative Capital Improvement Fund. The Town requested $9,000 and the State approved $3,758. The Fund is used for street repair and maintenance. The Town’s approved budget total is $767,964 for 2011.

At its Monday meeting, the North Judson Town Board approved the CKIN railroad’s request to purchase new railroad ties at a cost of $7,000. The volunteers plan to replace several ties in need of repair.
North Judson Town Board Approves Second Reading of Synthetic Marijuana Ordinance
The North Town Board approved the second reading of an ordinance that prohibits the sale of synthetic marijuana during its meeting Monday night. A Public Hearing concerning this ordinance will be held on Monday, January 3rd, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. CT at the North Judson Civic Center. A third and final reading will be approved during the Board’s regular meeting that evening at 6:30 p.m. CT.

North Judson Town Marshal, Doug Vessely, reports that in the month of November, the North Judson Police Department had 153 calls, 30 traffic stops, 15 lockouts, 8 thefts/conversion, 3 accidents, and 12 family disturbance calls.
North Judson Street Crews Plow 28 Inches of Snow, Citizens Asked to Uncover Fire Hydrants
North Judson Utility Superintendent, Dan Anderson, reported to the North Judson Clerk’s Office that street crews have plowed 28 inches of snow. Citizens are asked to remove snow from around fire hydrants in case of an emergency. If the North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department was called to a fire and the fire hydrant was covered with snow and not visible, firefighters would be delayed in putting out a fire.
North Judson Town Board Approves First Reading of Synthetic Marijuana Ordinance
The North Judson Town Board approved the first reading of an ordinance that prohibits the sale of synthetic marijuana within the incorporated town of North Judson. The ordinance mirrors the same guidelines as passed by the Starke County Commissioners. The Knox City Council has approved a similar ordinance on second reading and the final reading will be discussed at its meeting on Tuesday, December 14th.
Santa Claus Visits North Judson
Santa Claus visited North Judson and greeted approximately 125 children at the new North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department building on Luken Street on Saturday, December 4th. Santa arrived by train and was escorted to the Fire Department on a horse-drawn wagon. Children had fun talking with Santa and having hot chocolate and cookies Saturday afternoon.
North Judson Holiday Activities Begin Tonight
Don’t miss the Christmas light ceremony tonight at 6:00 p.m. CT at Norwayne Field in North Judson. Cookies and hot chocolate will be available at the old firehouse following the event.
Santa Claus will be arriving in North Judson on Saturday, by train, at 12:30 p.m. The Christmas parade will start at the Depot and end at the new firehouse on Luken Street. Santa will be greeting children at the firehouse where cookies and hot chocolate will be available.
North Judson-San Pierre Madrigal Dinner Tonight
The North Judson-San Pierre Madrigal Dinner and musical performance will be tonight at Grand Central Station in North Judson at 7:00 p.m. CT.
Under the direction of Donna Ness, the singers will be performing two other times, 7:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday. This is the 20th year for the performances.

North Judson-San Pierre Decathlon Team Participates in Local Competition
Answering questions about The Great Depression, the North Judson-San Pierre Academic Decathlon Team finished in fifth place in the Northwest Hoosier Academic Conference Decathlon competition at Kankakee Valley High School on Saturday, November 20th. The team finished first in the Oral Super Quiz, Team Super Quiz and Music.
R and R Horse Haven Finds a Home in North Judson
The Horse Haven dream has come true according to Mary Wodrich, Director of the therapedic establishment.
“This dream began last year at about this time,” said Wodrich. “With help from friends and neighbors and local people from North Judson, we are established now. R and R Horse Haven was established for disabled veterans, but we will not turn away anybody that can benefit from the use of a horse. We are located at the old Ag-Bio Center in North Judson.”
St. Vincent de Paul Society in North Judson Assists 401 Residents This Year
The St. Vincent de Paul Society of SS Cyril and Methodius Conference, has helped 401 persons in 2010 at a cost of $9,672.82. The Society serves persons in the North Judson – San Pierre area who have a need. Either financially or spiritually.
Society members provide information about services available to them and often help them through a financial crisis.
There are twenty-five members of the local society; Mary Kay Powell is President; Rich Akers, Vice President; Peg Okley, Treasurer; Joan Haugh, Secretary.

North Judson Town Board Approves Grant Match for Railroad Grant Application
The Hoosier Valley Railroad Secretary, Mark Knebel, attended the recent North Judson Town Board meeting where he informed the Board that the 2011 grant applications have opened and they will be applying for a $235,000 grant. The
grant match is 41% which is $96,350. Co-Alliance and the Chesapeake and Indiana Railroad have agreed to pay half of the match if the town could pick up the other half which is $48,175. The Board agreed to pay that amount. The railroad staff hopes to complete more upgrades if awarded this grant.
