One Arrested after Leaving the Scene of an Accident

A man was arrested in Marshall County Thursday night after leaving the scene of an accident.

Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene at U.S. 30 and King Road where a two-vehicle accident occurred. The driver of the car who reportedly caused the accident fled the scene.

Officers found the suspect’s vehicle traveling on the new U.S. 31 highway and attempted a traffic stop. The suspect didn’t not stop and a pursuit began. The vehicle came to a stop at the intersection of U.S. 6 and the driver, John Vogt, was arrested without incident.

Driver Arrested after Accident Investigation

A Tennessee driver was arrested after a two vehicle accident in Marshall County Saturday night.

Marshall County sheriff’s deputies were called to the intersection of State Road 8 and State Road 17. John Halloway, 48, of Chattanooga, Tennessee told police that he saw two vehicles traveling south on State Road 17 pull into the turn lane to continue west onto State Road 8. He told officers that he did not see a motorcycle behind those cars and pulled out into the intersection, according to the police report. Halloway stated that he struck the motorcycle on the right side and caused it to fall.

Man Arrested on Child Molesting Charge

A Texas man who was visiting residents at a home in the 100 block of Franklin Street in Plymouth was arrested on a preliminary charge of child molesting.

Plymouth Police Department officers were called to the home on Friday afternoon after receiving a report that an 11-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted. After further investigation, including the questioning of the suspect, 67-year-old Jonas Olvera, Olvera was arrested and booked into the Marshall County Jail on the charge of child molesting. Olvera was also wanted a warrant issued in 2009 in connection with another report of child molesting.

Ferguson, Donohue Surrender at Marshall County Jail

The former president and chief financial officer of the now closed business, Stone Creek Homes, Inc. of Plymouth, surrendered themselves to the Marshall County Jail Monday night.

Marshall County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Nelson Chipman told WKVI News that David A. Ferguson and Alan G. Donohue surrendered to the Marshall County Sheriff at 5 p.m. ET on Monday and bonded out of the jail a little while later. The pair each had a cash bond of $15,000.

Warrants for their arrest were issued recently. In January, a grand jury heard evidence against Ferguson and Donohue gathered by investigators from the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office and the Indiana State Police. The indictments were handed down on Feb. 20 of this year.

Court documents released on July 1 by Marshall County Prosecuting Attorney David R. Holmes allege Ferguson stole from employees and committed other racketeering violations between Feb. 13 and June 1, 2012.

Fourteen charges were filed against Ferguson including theft, receiving stolen property, conspiracy to receive stolen property, and corrupt business influence. Donohue faces 11 charges including aiding in the commission of theft, conspiracy to commit receiving stolen property, theft and corrupt business influence.

Ferguson and Donahue appeared in Marshall County Superior Court No. 1 Tuesday morning for an initial hearing where not guilty pleas were entered by the judge for both defendants. Trial dates were subsequently scheduled.

Two Arrested on Meth Charges

Two people were arrested in Marshall County after a search warrant was conducted Wednesday at a home in the 20,000 block of 8th Road.

Marshall County Police Department Patrol Division officers and K9 Arras assisted Indiana parole officers on a parole visit at the home. When officers arrived at the scene, it appeared that no one was home but items pertaining to the manufacture of methamphetamine could be seen in plain view.

Intoxicated Driver Arrested After Posting Bond for a Friend

A woman police say came to the Marshall County Jail early Sunday morning to post bond for a prisoner wound up back there as an inmate a short time later. According to a news release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, several people came to the jail at 4:15 a.m. As they were leaving about 20 minutes later, a jail staffer noticed one or more of them was possibly drunk. South Bend Woman Arrested after Traffic Stop

A traffic stop initiated by an officer with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department resulted in the arrest of the driver.

Ashley Turner’s vehicle was pulled over Wednesday night on U.S. 31 near the intersection of 1st Road. The officer reportedly found marijuana, a substance believed to be methamphetamine and a controlled substance. The officer believed that Turner may be under the influence of a controlled substance.

Marshall County Government to Move Foward with Bond Refinancing

The Marshall County Commissioners and the Marshall County Council met in joint session Monday morning to discuss the possibility of refinancing the bonds the county took out when the Marshall County Jail was built back in 2006.

The bond for the jail project was roughly $15 million in 2006 and $11 million is still outstanding. The county is hoping to lower their payment of $1.2 million per year until 2026.

Marshall County Council Entertains Budget Considerations

The Marshall County Council heard several requests from department heads for consideration for the 2015 budget.

One item is the upgrade of the 911 system at the Marshall County Jail. Matt Pitney, the 911 Supervisor, said the current system is at least ten years old. He added that parts are no longer available for repairs and a service agreement will no longer be an option since the company servicing the equipment has been bought out and that company has decided to “end of life” that system.

Plymouth Fire Department Requests Use of County Property for Training Facility

Training-TowerThe Plymouth Fire Department is looking for a piece of property to construct a live training facility. Fire Chief Rod Miller approached the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning to request the use of some land at the Marshall County Jail site.

“The purpose of this is to obtain property for this training facility,” explained Miller. “The use of this property would be a multi-agency use for the county departments including police and fire. It would definitely be an opportunity for every department in the county to take advantage of something like this. The closest one that we have now is in Warsaw.”

Two Arrested at Marshall County Truck Stop

Officers from the Marshall County Police Department arrested two men Tuesday afternoon following an investigation at the Pilot Travel Center in Plymouth. Casey Schoff was picked up on an felony warrant from Starke County, and Gregory Mullins was arrested and charged with driving while suspended-prior.

Both were lodged in the Marshall County Jail.

Marshall County Jail to Get Two New Stoves

Marshall County Sheriff Tom Chamberlin informed the Marshall County Council this week that the jail kitchen will be getting two new stoves.

He explained that the old stove was severely damaged when fire retardant had sprayed in the kitchen during an overnight incident in September. A settlement was reached to replace two commercial-grade stoves in the kitchen. When installed, the kitchen will have two stoves and four ovens to help prepare meals for the almost 200 inmates in the facility.

Marshall County Council Approves Add’l Appropriation of $80,000 for Prisoner Meals

The Marshall County Jail situation is causing the Marshall County Council to plan differently for next year’s budget.

Sheriff Tom Chamberlin was before the council Monday morning to ask for $80,000 in additional appropriations for prisoner meals for the rest of the year. He commented that just over the weekend the jail saw over 200 inmates in the facility which is the most that has been incarcerated at one time since the jail was built in 2006. The bed capacity is 238.

Marshall County Woman Arrested on Neglect, Battery Charges

A Plymouth woman was arrested on Friday after an investigation into battery and neglect incidents.

On May 21, Plymouth Police Department officers gathered information from the Department of Child Services that a seven-year-old child received burns at a residence on Alexander Street in Plymouth. The child had been living with her grandmother, Margo Wallace, at the time of the incident.

Three Arrested after Traffic Stop in Marshall County

A Saturday night traffic stop resulted in the arrest of three people.

Marshall County police received information that Lacy Holzwart, 24, would be in the LaVille area and she was known to have active arrest warrants against her. A traffic stop was initiated on a vehicle in which she was a passenger and during the traffic stop a substance believed to be methamphetamine was found in the vehicle. Holzwart was arrested on two active arrest warrants for Dealing a Narcotic Drug as a Class A and a Class B Felony, plus an arrest warrant for Conspiracy to Deal in a Narcotic Drug, a Class A Felony, and for Possession of Paraphernalia.
