Members of the Knox VFW Post 748 Ladies Auxiliary are raising awareness of and money for local wounded warriors over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Proceeds from a Sunday morning pancake breakfast at the post from 7 until 11 a.m. will benefit soldiers injured in the line of duty. After breakfast a 24-hour watch will begin outside the post. It will wrap up with a program Monday morning.
Memorial Day Celebrations Bring Office Closings
Memorial Day is being recognized on Monday, meaning several services normally in operation will be closed.
Government services, absent law enforcement will cease operations in honor of the celebration. The City of Knox’s Town Hall will be closed during Memorial Day, as will the Starke County Courthouse.
Starke County Commissioners Reiterate Support for Veteran Grave Flags, Markers
The Starke County Commissioners want to make sure every veteran who is buried in the county has an American flag and grave marker for Memorial Day. They’ve agreed pay for both if the American Legion posts in Knox, North Judson and Hamlet will take care of placing the orders and putting them on graves. Commissioner Don Binkley has tried without success to reach the commander of the Knox American Legion to discuss the process and find out how many flags and markers need to be ordered. INDOT Construction on Hold during Memorial Day Weekend
Road construction that is done by INDOT crews will come to halt over the Memorial Day weekend.
The road work moratorium will continue until the morning hours of Tuesday, May 27 to allow drivers a safer and more efficient holiday travel weekend.
Keep Memorial Day Closures in Mind Monday
Many offices and facilities are closed Monday, May 27, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. City offices are closed, including those in Knox, Hamlet, North Judson, Winamac, Plymouth and Culver. County, state and federal offices are closed, including post offices, courthouses and banks.
Schools across the Kankakee Valley will also be closed, including Knox Community Schools, North Judson-San Pierre Community Schools, Culver Community Schools, Eastern Pulaski Community Schools and West Central Community Schools.
Bass Lake Beach is Open!
It’s Memorial Day weekend and that means the Bass Lake Beach is once again open! The beach officially opened yesterday, just in time for the holiday weekend as people flock to Bass Lake to enjoy the quarter-mile of beach and the campsite just across the road.
ISP Offers Tips for Memorial Day Travelers
Memorial Day weekend marks the official start of the summer travel season and many Hoosiers are gearing up to take their family out for a pleasant summer vacation. However, there are some situations that can easily ruin a summer getaway, and the Indiana State Police are offering several tips to keep in mind when traveling.
First, avoid carrying large amounts of cash; carry only enough to pay for cabs, shuttle services, and other necessities. Credit and debit cards should not be left lying out where someone can see the number, and keep a copy of the credit card company’s number in a separate place so you can report the card stolen if it goes missing.
Memorial Day Events Planned for May 27
Memorial Day is just seven days away and a number of area VFWs and American Legions are preparing for ceremonies and other events to commemorate the holiday dedicating to remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
In Starke County, the Knox VFW will be holding their parade march on Memorial Day, May 27, at 9 a.m. beginning at the county courthouse where a short ceremony will be held. Following that, the group will march to Oak Hill Cemetery where they will hold another short ceremony to reflect on the fallen soldiers who fought to uphold our way of life.
More Than 200 Tickets Issued By Conservation Officers Over Holiday Weekend
Indiana Conservation Officers who cover seven counties including Fulton, Kosciusko and Marshall Counties, issued over 220 tickets over the Memorial Day weekend.
Officers spent the majority of their time on boating patrol enforcement, with 159 boating tickets given as well as 11 boating while intoxicated custodial arrests. One person was arrested on a felony count of intimidation with a deadly weapon. Other charges include disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana, and resisting law enforcement, along with other infractions. Twenty-five fishing violations were also discovered.
Sixteen officers logged 461 hours of patrol which included patrols at Potato Creek State Park and Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area.
Memorial Day Ceremonies Held Throughout Kankakee Valley
A grateful nation paid tribute to its fallen heroes yesterday during Memorial Day services around the country. Here in the Kankakee Valley, residents attended services under hot and humid conditions.

Memorial Day Services Planned For Today Throughout Area
Today, Memorial Day, is a day to reflect and remember those who made the supreme sacrifice for our freedom.
Several Memorial Day services are planned for Monday, May 28. In Knox, a ceremony will be held at the Starke County Courthouse at 9 a.m. followed by a parade to Oak Hill Cemetery where there will be another short ceremony. There will also be a brief ceremony in memory of Indiana National Guard Spc. Robert Tauteris, Jr. of Hamlet.
Memorial Day Marks Peak Of Driving Season
More Americans will be hitting the roads over Memorial Day, according to AAA. Between May 24 and May 28, 30.7 million people will drive 50 or more miles away from home. During the same time last year, 30.3 million people hit the road. This is the peak of the driving season in the United States.
Two-and-a-half million people will board flights.
The average price for regular gasoline last week nationwide was $3.73 a gallon, while last year during the Memorial Day weekend the average price was $3.96 a gallon.
Memorial Day Services To Be Held Sunday and Monday
Memorial Day Services will be held Sunday and Monday in North Judson, San Pierre, and La Crosse. The services will be conducted by the Harry Keller Post #92 American Legion, Harry Keller Unit #92 American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of American Legion Squad #92. The services will begin Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Round Lake.
On Monday, May 28, services will begin with an 8:45 a.m. parade, followed by services at Pioneer Cemetery at 9 a.m. and the San Pierre Cemetery at 10 a.m. A wreath will be deposited in the river on State Road 421 at 11 a.m., and services will be held at Velmar Memorial Park in La Crosse at 11:15 a.m.
Taking part in the services will be the North Judson-San Pierre Band.
Shorter Memorial Day Ceremonies Planned For Knox
The annual Memorial Day ceremonies on May 28 will take place at the Courthouse Memorial at 9 a.m. There will not be a 24-hour vigil as in previous years; instead, there will be a short ceremony at the courthouse, then the parade to Oak Hill Cemetery where there will be another short ceremony. The Redskin Brigade will participate in the ceremony. Appreciation for the brigade’s participation is being acknowledged by both the American Legion and VFW.
There will also be a brief ceremony in memory of Indiana National Guard Spec. Robert Tauteris, Jr. His name will be added to the monument this week.
American Flags Will Soon Proudly Wave Over U.S. 35
Knox Mayor Rick Chambers says his efforts to get American flags flying along U.S. 35 are going well, but he’s not sure if he’ll be able to get them up by Memorial Day.
Chambers says the American Legion donated a $400 check on Friday to get the project started, and he has already contacted the local VFW, who has informed him they are willing to help and are looking into what they can do to assist the cause. The Tri-Kappa organization has also said they would like to help the effort.
Knox Mayor Wants Flags to Fly For Memorial Day
With Memorial Day a little more than three weeks away, Mayor Rick Chambers is trying to get flags up on U.S. 35 to show the city’s patriotism. Chambers says a large number of items are required to mount the flags.
“We need brackets, poles, flags, stainless steel bands– everything to get flags up on 35. There are 35 light poles on the highway with lights on them in the city limits,” said Chambers.

The Knox VFW Post #748 will be hosting Memorial Day services until Noon on Monday, May 30th, where the the closing ceremonies and the retiring of the guard will be held at the Post Home. Several veterans, firefighters, police officers, and National Guard members will be standing vigil at the Post and a Civil War camp will be set up in the back of the facility.
24-Hour Vigil at Knox VFW Post
Memorial Day Services in the Kankakee Valley began Sunday at the Knox VFW Post 748. The posting of the guard ceremonies began at 12:00 noon. Speakers included Tim Shepherd of the VFW, Dewayne Arndt, representing Congressman Joe Donnelly, State Representative Nancy Dembowski, and Knox Mayor Rick Chambers.

The Knox VFW Post #748 will be hosting Memorial Day services beginning this Sunday, May 29th. Opening ceremonies begin at Noon on Sunday with the posting of the guard for a 24-hour vigil. Congressman Joe Donnelly will be speaking, along with State Representative Nancy Dembowski and Knox Mayor Rick Chambers. The Candlelight ceremony will be Sunday at 8:30 p.m. and all of the POW MIA soldiers’ names from the Iraq and Afghanistan War will be read. At Noon on Monday, May 30th, the closing ceremonies and the retiring of the guard will be held at the Post Home. Knox American Legion and VFW Lay Wreaths at War Memorial
Members of the Knox VFW and the American Legion laid wreaths at the War Memorial at the Starke County Courthouse. Organizer, Terry Turner, says this is a part of the national Wreaths Across America program.
