Starke County Election Board to Set Up Satellite Early Voting Site in North Judson

North Judson voters won’t have to travel to Knox to cast their ballots early ahead of November’s municipal election. Starke County Clerk Bernadette Welter-Manuel told the rest of the county election board last week that since North Judson is the only town having an election this year, she’d like to set up a satellite absentee voting location there.

Special Ed Transportation Needs Prompt Amendment to N.J.-S.P. Bus Replacement Plan

The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation is adjusting its bus replacement plan to accommodate the need for special ed transportation. Rather than getting three new full-size buses as originally planned, the school board agreed Tuesday to let the corporation buy one full-size bus and two multipurpose vehicles, instead.

N.J.-S.P. School Board to Consider Bowen Center Agreement, Technology Upgrades Tonight

The North Judson-San Pierre School Board will consider a service agreement with the Bowen Center tonight. A list of technology upgrades and enhancements will be presented for the school board’s approval, and members are expected to appoint a representative to the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library Board.

NJSP Superintendent Highlights A Few Important Dates at School Board Meeting

A special work session was scheduled for April 4th when North Judson San Pierre School Board members met Tuesday night.

Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin stated that during the work session, members are expected to discuss corporation plans including technology, wellness, accountability and strategic plans.

North Judson School Photos Find New Home

North Judson Water TowerThe class composite and group photos of North Judson and North Judson-San Pierre High School graduates will soon have a new home. They were recently displaced from Grand Central Station in downtown North Judson after a church took over that space. North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Lynn Johnson told the school board this week those photos will be on display at the new North Judson Town Hall when it opens later this year. Continue reading

Starke County Community Foundation Gives Generously to Local Organizations

 
 

A number of charitable organizations are on the receiving end of more than $40,000 in grants from the Starke County Community Foundation. The gifts are made possible through the foundation’s endowment fund, which is supported by gifts to the SCCF. The money is invested. Each year some of the interest goes back into the fund to help it grow, while some is given locally in the form of scholarships and grants. Continue reading

Tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps to Be Held Thursday

  
 
A musical tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps will take place this Thursday, March 20 at the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library at 2 p.m. CT.

Author Bill Jamerson has produced a dozen documentaries for Michigan Public Television, written stories and recorded many songs on historical subjects. During Thursday’s presentation, he will shares stories he has picked up first hand from former Civilian Conservation Corps boys he has met over the years.

North Judson Library Seeks Public’s Help in Digitizing Yearbooks

 
 

In an effort to preserve the memories stored in school yearbooks before they are lost to the sands of time, the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library is looking to digitize school yearbooks from North Judson-San Pierre High School, but according to Library Director Jane Ellen Felchuk, their collection is not complete. For that reason, the library is now asking for help from the public in order to compose a complete digital collection of the school’s yearbook history.

Two Vans Worth of Goods Donated to the Phoenix House

The North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library recently held a drive for the Phoenix House. They collected consumable items such as paper towels, toilet paper, and laundry detergent.

Roslynn Bejes mobilized the community, the schools, and businesses into supporting the organization. The goods that were collected filled two vans to capacity. In addition, the history, science, and English departments at the high school collected the most items.

Literacy Program Coming to Starke County

The SCILL Center Director Jerry Gurrado announced this week that a literacy program is coming to Starke County. Gurrado talked about the program’s focus.

“We had a training session at the library in Knox, and we had four volunteers that were trained,” explained Gurrado. “If anyone is in need of getting training in basic reading or math skills, the courses are taught in a one-on-one situation instead of in a big classroom.”
